Local Events Celebrate America Recycles Day 2011

Tuesday, Nov., 15, is America Recycles Day, and in observation of the event, JLab's ESH&Q Division staff would like to share information about three local events.

Tom Hassler, Environmental section, encourages everyone to take advantage of these free events.

The City of Newport News is again holding its very successful Miscellaneous Plastics Recycling event. Drop off your miscellaneous plastics at one of two locations in Newport News, now through Nov. 19, excluding Nov. 11 and 13 (Friday and Sunday). For a list of acceptable items, hours and collection locations, please visit www.nngov.com/recycle. This event is open to all residents and businesses.

A regional Electronics Recycling/Plastic Bag Recycling and Shredding event will be held at the York County Sports Complex on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  For a list of acceptable items and more information, please visit www.nngov.com/recycle.  This event is open to all residents and businesses. If you would like to volunteer, to help with unloading electronics at this event, please call 269-2872.

Visit the Newport News Public Works department to see a Food Waste Composting demonstration on Thursday, Nov. 17, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. If you would like to attend, RSVP to Dan Baxter, Newport News Recycling coordinator, at 269-2873. For more information about the program, call 886-7947. This event is open to all residents and businesses. Newport News, 23602. The Somat Company, specializing in waste reduction technology, will demonstrate some of its newest equipment for converting food waste to compost. The city is researching alternative options for managing food waste.
