Maximum Vacation Leave Balance

Dear Colleagues,

It’s that time of year to review your vacation balance...
On December 31, 2010, employees that reach the maximum vacation balance will forfeit any accruals that exceed the allowable limit.  Employees must use excess vacation by December 31, 2010 to ensure vacation accruals are not lost.

An employee’s date of hire is key in determining the maximum vacation accrual allowance.

Employees hired on or after October 5, 2006

  • The maximum vacation leave balance for employees hired on or after October 5, 2006 is 240 hours.
  • Any accrued vacation leave above 240 hours on midnight December 31, 2010 will be forfeited.

Employees hired before October 5, 2006

  • The maximum vacation leave balance for employees hired before October 5, 2006 is 384 hours.
  • Any accrued vacation leave above 384 hours on midnight December 31, 2010 will be forfeited.

**Important Information**
Question: When do I have to reduce my vacation balance to 240 hours?
Answer:  The maximum vacation leave balance for employees hired before October 5, 2006 will be reduced to 240 hours on midnight December 31, 2011 as opposed to May 31, 2011.  This allows employees 6 additional months to reduce their vacation accrual balance to 240. Therefore, everyone should plan and manage vacation time accordingly.
