Energy Department appoints new director for Jefferson accelerator in Newport News (The Virginian-Pilot)

Jefferson Lab to get new director

Hugh Montgomery will become the new director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility on Sept. 2, officials announced Thursday.

The Newport News laboratory conducts nuclear physics research.

Montgomery currently is the associate director for research at the Energy Department's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill.

In his new role, Montgomery will also serve as president of Jefferson Science Associates, a joint venture between the Southeastern Universities Research Association and CSC Applied Technologies that operates Jefferson Lab for the federal government.

Montgomery will replace Christoph Leemann, who has been the laboratory's director since 2000.
