New Associate Director for Physics at Jefferson Lab

Newport News, VA — Dr. Larry Cardman, former deputy associate director of physics at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), has assumed the role of Associate Director of Physics. He replaces Dr. John Domingo who stepped down following the completion and equipping of the three large and complex experimental halls at the laboratory. To date, six experiments have been completed since the first experimental hall was commissioned in 1995.

As Associate Director, Dr. Cardman plays a vital role in the successful operation of the Jefferson Lab Physics program. Responsibilities include the management of the fundamental research program that is carried out using the accelerator and the associated experimental equipment that make up the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. Dr. Cardman also serves as the key liaison to hundreds of users who come from across the world to conduct research in the experimental halls.

Dr. Cardman came to Jefferson Lab in 1989-90 on a sabbatical leave from the University of Illinois, and in 1993 became the Deputy Associate Director of Physics. In this position, Dr. Cardman assisted the Associate Director in the construction and equipping of the experimental halls.

Dr. Cardman has a bachelor’s of arts (1966) and doctoral degrees (1972) in Physics from Yale University. He is the author of more than 60 papers and is a member and a fellow of the American Physical Society where he serves on several committees including the Nuclear Physics Program Committee and the Executive Committee on the Division of Nuclear Physics.

Jefferson Lab is a nuclear physics research facility built to achieve a fundamental understanding of the nucleus of the atom. The nuclear physics community is provided with state-of-the-art equipment to conduct basic research of international significance on the quark structure of matter. The Laboratory employs more than 500 people and serves about 1,000 visiting physicists from the U.S. and abroad.

Jefferson Lab is managed and operated for the U.S. Department of Energy by the Southeastern Universities Research Association, a consortium of 41 universities in the southeast. For more information or color photos, please contact Deborah Hyman at (757) 269-5102 or Linda Ware at (757) 269-7689.
