The "XYZ" peaks observed in heavy quarkonium spectra appear near open inelastic channels. A possible explanation is that they are not new resonances but instead are generated by resonances in exchange channels. A new paper demonstrates that to test this hypothesis it is necessary to analyze the Dalitz plot distributions of the coupled channel system.

Facilities Management and Logistics

Reduction of 900 Plastic Bottles and Counting...
In support of lab sustainability, the Facilities Management and Logistics Division has installed a multi-functional, environmentally friendly water cooler in their shop. This commercial-quality water fountain and bottle-filling station provides cold, filtered and great-tasting water. The filling station allows employees to fill their own thermos or reusable bottle as needed, reducing the number of one-use, throw-away plastic bottles used. The Facilities shop personnel have been using the cooler and bottle filler for the past three months and have eliminated the need to purchase more than 900 plastic bottles’ worth of water!

Five additional units have been purchased, and units are now installed in: the Support Service Center (Bldg. 28), the Free-Electron Laser (Bldg. 12), the North and South Access Buildings (Bldgs. 67 and 38), and the General Purpose Building (Bldg. 36). For more information about the stations, contact Bob Sperlazza, x6241.

Environment, Safety, Health & Quality

Cold Weather and Critters
With the recent annual shift in temperatures to the cooler side and colder temperatures to come, many small animals and insects will start seeking shelter and warmth. Some of these creatures will find a home in warm Jefferson Lab buildings. As the weather continues to change, be especially vigilant for such critters as spiders, snakes, rodents, deer and other critters.

If you encounter what may be a poisonous insect or other animal in a difficult location, the proper response is to leave the insect or animal alone and, if needed, contact Facilities Management and Logistics at x7400 for removal. Never try to kill or physically handle such critters. Jefferson Lab has properly trained contractors who, following the laws and regulations for animal removal, can properly handle the situation promptly.

There will be several quick outages to the K, L, and M drives this evening to update the configuration on the new file server that was installed last night. The outages should last no more than a minute each, with a total of four in all. No data will be lost, and the file server will be back up and stable by 5:45 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns about this maintenance period, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

Tailgate Event Set for Oct. 28
Jefferson Lab employees and users are invited to the Jefferson Lab Activity Group Tailgate scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28, 3-5:30 p.m., in the field behind the SURA Residence Facility. The Tailgate will feature chili, nachos, grilled foods and beverages, and games for all ages. You are encouraged to wear your favorite team's colors (whatever the sport) and sturdy shoes, and dress for potentially cool afternoon/evening temperatures. In order to make this event a success, the JAG committee needs volunteers to help with set up, food and drink service, drink bracelets and clean up. Volunteer positions, in one-hour shifts, are posted on the JAG webpage. Volunteer just one hour of your time to help make this event a big success! Sign up today! Planned activities also include a pickup soccer game and a cornhole tournament (teams must register in advance, details to follow).

Sign Up for Cornhole at Oktoberfest!
The annual Oktoberfest, held by the Jefferson Lab Activities Group, is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28. This year's event will once again feature a Cornhole Tournament. If you would like to participate you must pre-register your two-person team by COB Friday, Oct. 23, by contacting Bruce Reinhart or Danny Machie. All pledge forms should be returned to Krystina Serafini, Mail Stop 12B, CEBAF Center Room B214, by Monday, Nov. 2.
