Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season!

QUARK DIPOLE OPERATORS AND CP VIOLATION
The matter-antimatter asymmetry shortly after the Big Bang requires violation of CP (charge conjugation and parity reflection) symmetry beyond that which can be explained by the standard model of particle physics. The permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron provides an ideal laboratory for precision searches for new sources of CP violation, because the current experimental bound is many orders of magnitude above the standard model prediction. A new paper provides a perturbative analysis of the relevant CP-violating operator basis that can be implemented in lattice QCD, and is required for future precision calculations of hadronic contributions to the neutron EDM.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALEX BOGACZ - 2022 APS OUTSTANDING REFEREE
Congratulations to Alex Bogacz, who has been named a 2022 Outstanding Referee by the American Physical Society!  Each year the APS recognizes a select few of the 82,000 reviewers for the essential work that anonymous peer reviewers do for the many APS journals.

Bogacz has been named as one of Outstanding Referees of the Physical Review journals, as chosen by the journal editors. The citation reads “Your reports and advice have helped us to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics, while creating a resource that is invaluable to authors, researchers, students, and readers. We could never have done this without the generous and wise contributions of superb referees like you.” Awardees will be recognized at prize and award sessions at the 2022 APS Meetings in Chicago and New York. Congratulations!

REMINDER: 2022 GENERAL ACCESS RWP - DEADLINE JAN. 7
The 2022 General Access Radiological Work Permit (RWP) is now available. Jefferson Lab radiation workers must read and electronically sign the RWP by Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, to retain accelerator site access. Access the web-based SAF801kd training here. For more information about the RWP, click here. For questions, contact Becky Mosbrucker at 757-269-7236. If you have questions regarding the content of the General Access RWP, contact the Radiation Control Department

REMINDER: CST DIVISION MAINTENANCE - DEC. 21
The CST Division is planning a maintenance period on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 5-10 p.m. During this time, the following activities and outages can be expected:

  • Windows patches will be released to all managed systems and services. Please ensure your desktop has been patched and rebooted prior to leaving for the holiday shutdown.
  • Linux patches will also be released, and managed servers will be rebooted overnight to ensure kernel and library updates are installed.
  • MIS applications (reqs, etc.) will be down from 5-10 p.m. while the underlying systems are patched and rebooted. All systems will be back online no later than 10 p.m.
  • There may be a brief outage to the Safenet/MobilePass 2factor environment while the underlying database server is modified. Please plan to log in to the hallgw or other 2factor systems prior to 5 p.m. The CST Divisions expects the database work to be completed by 6 p.m., although it may be up much earlier.

If you have any questions or concerns about these planned outages, please contact the CST Division Help Desk at 757-269-7155.

CAMPUS-WIDE PHONE OUTAGE SCHEDULED - DEC. 28
On Tuesday, Dec. 28, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Cox Communications will be migrating all of the JLab phone extensions to new hardware. This outage will affect local and long-distance calling in and out of JLab. Internal calling between JLab phone extensions will not be affected. The outage experienced by each phone number will be brief, but could occur at any time during the outage window. If there is an emergency:

  • Use a cell phone to call 911.
  • After you are advised to hang up by the 911 dispatch operator, immediately call the Jefferson Lab security cell phone at 757-342-9868.
    • Advise security of the 911 call, the nature of the emergency and the location of the emergency.

For questions about this outage, contact the CST Division Help Desk or call 757-269-7155.

ZOOMGOV REPLACING BLUEJEANS - JAN. 31
The laboratory acquired Zoom for Government (ZoomGov) for videoconferencing and webinars to replace BlueJeans. As a reminder to BlueJeans customers, any recordings stored on the lab’s BlueJeans instance must be downloaded and saved elsewhere. BlueJeans recordings of previous meetings will not be available after our BlueJeans contract ends on Monday, Jan. 31. Please visit the How to Download & Share Recordings (bluejeans.com) for guidance.

Additionally, remember that recurring BlueJeans meetings will not be migrated to ZoomGov. You will need to manually schedule these meetings in the lab’s ZoomGov instance. If you haven’t already, visit the Getting Started with JLab’s Zoom Gov Instance knowledge base (KB) article for help with logging into the lab’s ZoomGov instance and helpful training material. For questions, contact the CST Division Help Desk or call 757-269-7155.

CRITICAL VULNERABILITY IN LOG4J JAVA LIBRARY
As a reminder, there is a critical vulnerability being exploited across the Internet. This vulnerability is with the log4j library, which is a Java based logging framework. Staff and Users that have developed applications using log4j need to determine if they are using a vulnerable version, and if vulnerable update their code. Log4j versions 2.0-beta9 through 2.15.0 are vulnerable.

Commercial and open source software may also make use of or have embedded in them vulnerable versions of log4j. These applications will need to be patched or updated. Check with the developers of applications you use and update accordingly. The CST Division does not manage individual end user applications and is relying on you to update your applications. Centrally managed CST provided applications and services are being addressed by the CST Division. If you have any questions or concerns about this issue, contact the CST Division Help Desk at 757-269-7155.

NOTICE OF ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM LOCKDOWN TEST - DEC. 21
On Tuesday, Dec. 21 from 8-9 p.m., Security will conduct a performance assurance test of Jefferson Lab’s Access Control System (ACS) lockdown function. The test will temporarily deactivate all ACS card readers denying Jefferson Lab photo badge holders from gaining entry through an ACS equipped door. The on-site security team will assess a pre-determined number of exterior building doors to confirm the ACS lockdown function works as designed. Once completed, Security and Facilities Management will restore the ACS to its normal configuration. Test completion is expected within 45 minutes.

REMINDER: LAB HOLIDAY SHUTDOWN DATES

The lab will shut down at close of business on Wednesday, Dec. 22, and will remain closed until Monday, Jan. 3.

Dec. 23, 24, 30 and 31 are designated as holidays, while Dec. 27, 28 and 29 can be taken as vacation days / vacation plus Standard Leave Without Pay (LWOP) or as Elective LWOP. Be sure to check that you are charging time to the appropriate leave codes.

For more information, review the internal memo here. For questions, contact Human Resources

REMINDER: PAYCHECK PAY DATE TIMING CHANGE - JAN. 2022
Effective January 2022, JSA will issue paychecks on the 10th and 25th of each month, ten days after the end of the timesheet period. This change is necessary to conform to pay requirements in all states where JSA has employees. With this change, it is imperative that timesheets are signed and approved by the published deadline, 10 a.m. the day following the timesheet period end date, as there is less time to process payroll. For more information, review the internal memo here. For questions, contact the Payroll Department

OPEN HOUSE POSTPONED INDEFINITELY
The lab has decided to postpone its next open house event. It had been scheduled for March 2022. The laboratory’s open house events have been put on hold since 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Read the full announcement here. For questions, contact Lauren Hansen
