May 14, 1991

FET Operations

  • Preparations are proceeding for installation of the second cryomodule. Upgrade of RF software continues.

WBS 1

  • The cryomodule (traveler #6) tested okay. The Q’s are within 10% of design specification and all vacuums are excellent. One tuner jammed and was traced to an interference with the longitudinal restraint rods leading to a bent shaft on the rotary feedthrough. Another tuner was sticky but freed itself when warm. These are under repair, and the cryomodule will be installed in the tunnel Wednesday.
  • Assembly of the next cryomodule (traveler #7) continues. Two cryounits, with nonsolid window frames, are complete and in the cryomodule assembly area. Two cryounits, one with and one without solid window frames, are being assembled in the cryounit assembly are. It is expected that this cryomodule will undergo testing by the beginning of June.

WBS 2

Stands:

  • The contract was placed with Concrete Cutting Co., Inc., for the installation of the stands in the east arc.
  • The drawings for the girders for the arc quadrupoles were signed off.

WBS 3

RF Systems/Front End Test:

  • Continued work on 0L05 HPA equipment. Will operate the 0L05 HPA into dummy loads as soon as installation and troubleshooting are completed.

RF Power:

  • The first set of three AC line reactors for the 0L05 HPA power supply has been completed and installed.
  • The contract for the rigid 1 5/8” coaxial transmission line for the RF distribution system has been placed with unique systems.
  • The contract for the 70-MHz directional couplers for the RF distribution system has been placed with MEC.
  • The contract for ½” coaxial cable, ¼” coaxial cable, and type N connectors for ¼” coaxial cable has been placed with Andrews Corporation.
  • The contract for type N coaxial connectors with Rexolite insulators for ½” coaxial cable and type N connectors for ½” coaxial cable was placed with Mega Industries.
  • Klystron serial 106 was returned to Varian due to low cathode emission. Checks of cathode emission for other suspect klystrons will be made.

Fabrication:

  • Completed and shipped an engineering sample of +/- 12 V power supply with parts kits to vendor for manufacture.
  • Continuing fabrication of control cables, coaxial cables, RF crates, crowbars, transformers, etc.

WBS 4

  • Installed fourth trim rack (located in east end of north linac service building).
  • Connected AC power to last HPA in injector service building.

WBS 5 – No Report Received.

WBS 6

  • The Hall C quadrupole bids were received last Wednesday and are under evaluation and review. Contract award is slated for early September 1991.
  • Best and final offers (BAFOs) were requested for the Hall C dipole (coil/cryogenic portions) last Tuesday; responses from bidders are expected by 17 May. BAFOs for the steel portion will be released this week with responses due within two weeks. Contract awards for both dipole components are scheduled this month.
  • The Physics Division Theory Group leader, Nathan Isgur, is organizing and hosting Physics Division Town Meetings. The purpose of these biweekly meetings is to first consider all the interesting physics accessible to a 1 to 10 GeV beam. Then, in-depth discussions. Analyses, and (hopefully) development of practical, innovative experiment proposals will follow.

WBS 7

  • The CHL continues to operate at 4 K. Preparations are in progress for installing the cryomodule from the test lab on 20 May.
  • The testing of the cryomodule in the test lab has been completed. The CTF refrigerator is being operated in a holding mode.
  • The -in. pipe of the return transfer line is being vacuum pumped. The pressure is coming down slowly. We hope to leak check this portion this week.
  • CVI is due on site this week. We will attempt to clean up the hit list. Programming of the cold compressors is progressing. We require additional information form CVI in order to continue without any holdup.

WBS 8

  • The dome subcontractor continued erecting shoring in Hall A for constructing the concrete dome. This activity is now about 85% complete.
  • Completed placing five first- second-lift concrete walls sections in Hall B.
  • Completed placing seven second- and final-lift wall sections in Hall C.
  • The walls for the truck access tunnel C are complete. The roof is about 90% complete.
  • Completed 80% of the walls for truck access tunnel B.
  • Continued backfilling truck access tunnel A, the north and west sides and beam dump of Hall A, and the beam dump at Hall C.
  • MCI, the end station above-ground subcontractor, moved in and set up their office trailer.

  • The CEBAF Run-A-Round and Family Picnic are scheduled for Friday, 31 May, and Saturday, 1 June. Details are available from Personnel.
