Grand re-opening event brings more menu choices, name for Lab's cafeteria

On Jan. 31, Jefferson Lab's cafeteria, located in CEBAF Center, celebrated a grand re-opening and was named "Quark Cafe." A large group of Lab employees and users filled the cafeteria and lobby for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

"We had a great turnout," says Judy Casto, food director for Eurest Dining Services, the company providing contracted cafeteria, banquet and other special event food services for JLab. "The cafeteria now has an identity and that feels good. The Eurest staff and JLab's Staff Services put a lot of work into making this event lots of fun and a great success."

The cafeteria-naming contest brought in hundreds of submissions. Sharon Parkinson, CFO budget officer, won with the streamlined, catchy, yet definitive "Quark Cafe." Parkinson's win netted her a CD player/AM/FM portable stereo system and a free, family-sized, holiday dessert of her choice. Parkinson selected a peach cheesecake from the Eurest staff's dessert menu. "It was beyond delicious! I had to limit myself and my husband (Jim) to one slice of cheesecake each per day," she admits.

Later that week, the church the Parkinsons attend announced in its bulletin that it needed a portable stereo for the youth group. "It seemed like fate," Parkinson says, "so I gave the CD player to the youth group; they use it each Sunday."

Quark Cafe has added to its breakfast and lunch menu choices. It now features a European-style breakfast bar, Monday through Thursday mornings. Once a week, it also offers a lunchtime Chef's Table selection. The Chef's Table features on-the-spot display cooking. "Our customers get to select their own ingredients and see their meal cooked right in front of them," Casto explains. Everyone has fun, including the chefs."

The cafeteria is also introducing more international foods to the menu. Quark Cafe is open for breakfast, Monday through Friday, 7-9:30 a.m. Lunch is served Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. (the hotline shuts down at 1:30 p.m.)
