Paul Gubanc brings more than four decades of DOE experience to the lab
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has selected Paul Gubanc as the lab's new director of the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Division and chief safety officer. Gubanc officially assumed his new role on Feb. 17.
"I am excited to join Jefferson Lab and I look forward to leading a team that values innovation and collaboration as we build on the lab’s strong safety culture,” said Gubanc.
With more than 40 years of extensive experience within the DOE complex, Gubanc’s expertise spans nuclear and industrial safety, environmental regulation, performance assurance, risk management, engineering and safety culture in both the public and private sectors.
During his career, Gubanc has held multiple leadership positions, including oversight of ES&H training, engineering and operations for 10 nuclear facilities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
He has successfully implemented DOE directives while leading organizations of up to 100 personnel and managing budgets exceeding $150 million in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
"His leadership will be instrumental as we continue to prioritize the safety and health of our employees while advancing the mission of Jefferson Lab," said Jefferson Lab Chief Operating Officer Johnathon Huff.
Gubanc holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Tennessee. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia, a Certified Safety Professional and a Project Management Professional.
