Jefferson Science Associates, LLC Receives 2017 EPEAT Purchaser Award

Recognizes Green Policies in Electronics Purchasing

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- It’s not easy being green, but Jefferson Science Associates, LLC (JSA) managed to do just that by selecting electronics that meet both Information Technology (IT) and sustainability goals. JSA’s efforts in 2016 were rewarded on March 13, 2017 at a ceremony in Arlington, in which JSA was presented with a 2017 EPEAT Purchaser Award.

The EPEAT system began in 2003 with a stakeholder process convened by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and has become the definitive global environmental rating system for electronics including PCs and displays, imaging equipment and televisions. Managed by the Green Electronics Council, EPEAT currently tracks more than 4,400 products from more than 60 manufacturers across 43 countries.

This is the second year that JSA has received this distinction. Over their lifetime, compared to products that do not meet EPEAT criteria, the 288 EPEAT registered electronics that JSA purchased in 2016 will reduce primary materials by 36.6 metric tons, eliminate the equivalent of six months’ worth of one U.S. household’s solid waste, avoid disposal of 251 kg of hazardous waste, and avoid 154 kg of water pollutant emissions.

The government EPEAT criteria embraced by JSA’s Environmental Management, Information Technology, and Procurement departments, as well as the DOE Thomas Jefferson Site Office (TJSO) yields energy-related savings – enough electricity to power eight U.S. homes for a year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17.9 metric tons.

“Procurement practices such as EPEAT help Jefferson Lab make sustainable purchasing decisions,” says Jefferson Lab Procurement Manager Lynn McKnight. “This is not only good business, but good for the environment and our community in the long term.”
