Event: More than 30 high school students and college undergraduates who participated in summer, science internship programs at the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab, will share with invited guests and members of the lab community results from their work and research projects during a poster session. The poster session brings to a close a very successful summer intern session designed to promote careers in scientific research and engineering. The DOE’s national laboratories provide a unique opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce development by offering access to leading scientists, world-class scientific user facilities and instrumentation, and large-scale, multidisciplinary research programs.

Many members of the Jefferson Lab community and invited guests turned out for the Aug. 1, 2014, summer intern poster session held in the CEBAF Center lobby. High school and college summer interns participated in a variety of research projects at the lab. Each student was responsible for developing a poster to present and explain his or her work. Students were eager to answer questions about their project and what they learned over the summer.
Participants in this summer's poster session include:
- Nine (9) Hampton Roads-area high school students participating this summer in Jefferson Lab's High School Summer Honors Internship Program. The students are pursuing college preparatory programs and intend to major in various scientific fields in college.
- Fourteen (14) college students, taking part in the Office of Science/Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program. The SULI program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.
- Eight (8) college students participating in the National Science Foundation-funded Old Dominion University/Jefferson Lab Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) accelerator and nuclear physics program. The REU program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.
Many of these individuals are from the Newport News area and Virginia. Their respective summer projects directly involved them in the culture, activities and science of a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory. Project topics ranged from accelerator and nuclear physics science and experimental research to engineering, industrial hygiene and safety, computer programming and facilities management.
