The Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Va., is hosting this year's Virginia Regional Science Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 7. Twenty-three teams, representing high schools from across the state are participating in this annual, academic competition, and nine schools from Hampton Roads are competing. News media are invited to attend all or any part of the daylong event. Please contact one of the people listed below by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 if you plan on attending any part of the tournament.
In an intense question-and-answer game format, contestants will be grilled on their knowledge in various fields of science. The first place team wins a trip to the Science Bowl Nationals held in Washington D.C., April 29-May 3. Runner-up teams win cash prizes to purchase science equipment for their respective schools. Last year's winning team at the national competition was the winner of the Virginia regional competition hosted at Jefferson Lab.
For security purposes visitors must enter at the Lab's main entrance (Onnes Dr.). Everyone over 16 is asked to carry a photo I.D., and security guards may perform parcel and vehicle inspections. What: 2004 Virginia Regional Science Bowl
When: Saturday, Feb. 7. Round robin competition runs from 10 a.m. - noon. The double elimination, semi-final and finalist rounds run from 1:30 - 5 p.m. The awards presentations will be made immediately after the final round.
