It’s hot out, but not as hot as a ticket to Physics Fest
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Dive into the science of the hot, the cold and the matter around us at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The summer Physics Fest presentations offer an exciting opportunity for students to explore matter in our everyday world.
Jefferson Lab is keeping the fun going with two summer sessions of Physics Fest. This educational, hands-on program features a shocking display of static electricity, a chilling demonstration of cryogenics and an exploration of scorching hot plasmas. The 75-minute session aims to showcase the science and technology used at Jefferson Lab to conduct experiments, while educating students on the nature of matter.
Science Education Administrator Rhonda Bell will engage students in a series of experiments to understand the forms of matter. Demonstrations will illustrate science concepts with cryogenic liquids by freezing flowers, balls and air inside balloons. Prepare to be amazed as students will also witness the diffraction of light in plasmas.
Physics Fest will take place July 17 and August 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. This free program is open to schools, camps and families, but advance registration is required. It will be held in the CEBAF Center auditorium, located at 12000 Jefferson Avenue. A link to a map and directions is available on the reservations page.
Adults are required to stay with students for the entirety of the event. Everyone over the age of 16 is required to carry a photo ID. Security guards may inspect vehicles, book bags, backpacks and other items.
