Daylight Saving Time Begins on Sunday, March 13; Set Clocks Ahead One Hour

Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins on Sunday, March 13. If you have clocks or other electronic devices that don't reset themselves, you might want to set them ahead one hour before going to bed on Saturday night – so they reflect the correct time when you get up on Sunday.

This is also a good time to change out batteries in your smoke/fire alarms and other battery driven electronic safety devices. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 65 percent of reported home fire deaths from 2000-2004 resulted from fires in homes without smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Batteries need to be replaced at least once every year in standard battery-powered smoke alarms and in hard-wired, battery back-up smoke alarms. In addition, the test button should be used every month to make certain the unit is working.

Don't remember the last time you changed the battery? The Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery campaign (sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Energizer ™, and a network of 6,200 fire departments) encourages Americans to change the batteries in their smoke alarms when they spring forward or fall back for Daylight Saving Time.

Catch the Free Yoga Classes on Wednesdays in CEBAF Center

As a JAG activity, Joe Beaufait, Physics Division, is offering free, all-level yoga classes on Wednesdays in CEBAF Center. The classes run from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and take place in one of three areas of CC: the auditorium, or conference room F113 or F224/225.

Joe is a 200-hour certified yoga instructor. He describes this all-level class as friendly to the beginner, but offers plenty of challenges for those who want to push themselves. Yoga is a great way to lower blood pressure, lose weight, gain flexibility and reduce stress, he adds.

If you are interested, just bring a yoga mat, and wear easy-to-move-in clothing to the class.

If you’d like notification, let Jodi Patient, CEBAF Center receptionist, know and she’ll post the classes to your zimbra calendar.

The weather is getting nice… are you ready for Legal Boating in Virginia? Local CSPS Course offered April 12&14

In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law to establish a boating safety education compliance requirement (reference http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/boating/).

Beginning July 1, 2016, all PWC (personal watercraft) operators age 14 years and older and all motorboat operators, regardless of age, need to take a boating safety course. By 2016, all operators of PWCs (personal watercraft such as jet skis, Sea Doos, Wave Runners, etc.) and operators of motorboats with a 10 hp or greater motor, will be required to have a boating safety education course completion card on board when operating a PWC or motorboat.

To this end, the local Colonial Sail and Power Squadron (CSPS) offers free classes to the public at prescribed intervals. As a matter of convenience to peninsula boaters, and especially those of the Jefferson Lab community, CSPS is offering a two-evening class at the Denbigh Community Center, April 12th and 14th (6-9 p.m.).

Folks can register for the course at: https://www.register-ed.com/events/view/75945

For those unable to attend this session, future classes are anticipated by CSPS and other organizations, as well as online, for a nominal fee (~$30). Don't ruin a summer sail with a citation! Get this safety training now and be ready to enjoy the water this summer!
