Young Researcher Awarded Funds from European Union for International Research
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Andrea Signori, a Jefferson Lab postdoc in the Theory Center was recently awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (MSCA) through the European Commission, the executive of the European Union. The MSCA allow researchers to conduct research across international boundaries. Signori’s proposal was one of 1348 selected for funding out of 9089 proposals submitted to the program, designed “to create a game-changing impact on our society and economy.”

Most of us walk around with a smart phone, but I bet it’s news to many that the tools first built to understand the workings of the nucleus of the atom, the same tools used here at Jefferson Lab, became the tools to ultimately create smart phones (and more). Having my smartphone is great; it helps me get through my busy day. It lets me stay in touch with my family, and gives me the ability to me check my email on the go. I can text the dog sitter, take pictures and share them on social media, and so on and so on.

Protons appear to get extra pep in their step when they’re outnumbered by neutrons in the atom’s nucleus.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – A new study carried out at the Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has confirmed that increasing the number of neutrons as compared to protons in the atom’s nucleus also increases the average momentum of its protons. The nuclear physics result, which has implications for the dynamics of neutron stars, has been published in the journal Nature.

Anticipation grows as teams prepare for March 3 competition at Jefferson Lab
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Anticipation is growing across the Commonwealth and at Jefferson Lab as the date draws near for the 2018 Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl. The lab is preparing for 17 teams to compete in the academic competition set for Saturday, March 3.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will conduct the monthly test of its tornado warning siren at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren could be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab.
The test will be carried out over a period that could last up to three minutes. The test will be of the wavering tone (also called high-low-high or 10-4-10).

Thirteen teams prepare to compete at Jefferson Lab on February 3
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Excitement is building at Jefferson Lab as the date for the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl draws near. The lab will welcome 13 teams to this year’s event on Saturday, February 3.
“We are looking forward to the teams and their coaches and family members attending the day-long academic tournament,” comments Christine Wheeler, Jefferson Lab Science Education administrator. “We can’t wait for the students to tackle the questions they will encounter this year.”
