NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Jefferson Science Associates, the operations and management contractor for the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, has awarded its 2018 Outstanding Small Business of the Year Award to James R. Reed & Associates, a local environmental services firm.

Founded in 1976, James R. Reed & Associates has grown to be a full-service environmental testing facility serving the Mid-Atlantic region and particularly Virginia and North Carolina. James R. Reed & Associates offers a variety of consulting services to their clients, including wastewater/groundwater testing, drinking water analysis and field sampling services.

“We collaborate internally and with clients to stay ahead of challenges,” says Elaine Claiborne, James R. Reed & Associates laboratory director. “Quality and customer service is always our top priority – there is always someone available to assist – and we make sure that we deliver accurately and reliably for our partners.”

James R. Reed & Associates is a Newport News-based company that employs 24 professionals. The firm has worked with Jefferson Lab for approximately a decade and was recently awarded a contract renewal for ground water monitoring and wastewater permit management. This work includes the support and management of the lab’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requirements, as well as the environmental requirements from the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD).

The Outstanding Small Business of the Year award program recognizes the top-performing small firms doing business with Jefferson Lab. Any small business doing work for Jefferson Lab may be considered for the award, which has been presented annually since 1991. James R. Reed & Associates was nominated by Jefferson Lab’s Scott Conley, environmental engineer, and Michele Khasidis, procurement administrator, and was selected for the competitive Small Business of the Year Award based on their history of going above and beyond in both day-to-day and reactive situations.

Jefferson Lab Director Stuart Henderson recently presented the 2018 Outstanding Small Business of the Year Award to Claiborne and other key employees from James R. Reed & Associates.

“In making this annual award, we seek to highlight the many benefits to the lab and to the small businesses that we work with,” said Jami Anthony, Jefferson Lab Small Business Program liaison. “We are happy to make this award to James R. Reed & Associates for the outstanding work that they have performed for the lab over the years.”

Through its Small Business Program, Jefferson Lab works to provide maximum opportunities to small businesses, veteran-owned small businesses, service-disabled/veteran-owned small businesses, HUBZone small businesses, small disadvantaged businesses, women-owned small business concerns, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the maximum level possible that is consistent with the efficient performance of its prime contract with the Department of Energy.
