Jefferson Lab to Host Teachers' Course

For the second year, Jefferson Lab is hosting physics enrichment for science teachers.

The Department of Energy physics research lab, at 12000 Jefferson Ave. is seeking applications for its four-week program for science teachers.

The program involves a mini-course in basic physics, guest lectures on current research at Jefferson Lab, and interactive activities designed to enhance physical science instruction at he middle school level, according to Jan Tyles, Education Program manager.

The program includes a discussion of the knowledge needed to meet Standards of Learning requirements.

And, in response to teachers' requests, workshops specifically for developing classroom activities are being added to this years's curriculum.

The course runs from July 9 to August 2.

Participants meet four hours a day, four days each week.

Teachers who complete the program will earn 64 hours of recertification points. Each participant receives a $700 stipend.

The program is open to full-time middle school science teachers in public, private of parochial schools. Application forms may be downloaded from http://education.jlab.org/pest and complete applications packages must be received at the lab by March 30.
