U. Va. Gets $2.5 Million for Study at Jefferson Lab

The University of Virginia has landed a $2.5 million National Science Foundation grant to fund study by graduate students at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News.

"Students will have the opportunity to extend their professional horizons, work with national-scale state-of-the-art equipment, experience life at a national lab and interact with industrial scientists through internships with the consortium companies," said Ian Harrison, an associate professor of chemistry at U.Va.

The five-year grant will have U.Va.'s science and engineering departments working in tandem with Norfolk State University at the Free-Electron Laser Laboratory at the Newport News facility.

The grant will pay the stipends of the graduate fellows, tuition, equipment and the cost of setting up a U.Va.-Norfolk lab in Newport News. The program is expected to have seven students a year at U.Va. and one at Norfolk State by the fall of 2000, Harrison said.
