NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility today announced the appointment of Roy Whitney as its chief technology officer. In the position, Whitney will be responsible for fostering technology development and enhancing the lab’s technology transfer program.
“My focus will be to lead Jefferson Lab’s efforts to expand its technology development efforts and to seek opportunities where the lab can apply its technology to commerce and industry,” Whitney said.
Whitney, who also will continue to serve as Jefferson Lab’s chief information officer, is a Newport News resident. He has been a member of the Jefferson Lab staff since the lab’s founding in 1984.
Prior to joining the lab, Whitney received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and taught physics and conducted research at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Smith College, Springfield Technical Community College and the University of Virginia. He has worked at Stanford University's High Energy Physics Lab, Berkeley Lab, Los Alamos-LAMPF, MIT-Bates, as well as at Saclay in France.
