Event: Jefferson Science Associates/Jefferson Lab will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Virginia Science Technology Engineering and Applied Mathematics (STEAM) Academy. The academy, a proposed four-year residential program intended to be a uniquely challenging experience for high-school students with ability and potential in science, technology, engineering or math, is slated to accept its first freshman class in 2014. The program will be designed to prepare students to enter higher education and then the workplace with knowledge and skills in science and technology, so they are prepared to contribute to U.S. competitiveness in a world economy. Nineteen similar public, specialized immersion programs are already in place around the nation. The MOU helps to establish a partnership that will provide outstanding educational opportunities to STEAM faculty and students.
The MOU signing will be followed at 3 p.m. by a colloquium titled "Virginia STEAM Academy: An Initiative for Growing the Commonwealth's Next Generation of Scientists, Engineers & Technology Professionals" to be given by VA STEAM Academy co-founders, Dr. Judy Stewart and Mrs. Caroline Martin in the CEBAF Center auditorium.
News media representatives are invited to the signing as well as the colloquium. Media wishing to attend the signing are asked to be at the lab no later than 2:15 p.m. Media may attend all or any portion of the event.
