12 GeV Upgrade

The 12 GeV team has integrated the installation plans into the lab-wide integrated schedule, and monthly progressing to update the schedule has started. The 12 GeV team continues to participate in “Long Shutdown” planning team to coordinate 12 GeV installation activities. As installation activities increase in the completed conventional facilities, weekly meetings with Facilities Management and Logistics ensure coordination and support. The team has finalized all transportation, material handling equipment, space, storage and waste/recycle needs. Evaluation of needs will continue throughout the shutdown. Installation activities at Hall D are increasing and are being coordinated through the Hall D work coordinator.

Long Shutdown

The test of the C100-4 cryomodule in zone 2L22 in the tunnel was successfully completed last week. Work on the swing shift is now focused on tests of radio frequency controls in the South Linac new zones SL23, 24 and 25. Tunnel work and magnet rework for the spreaders and recombiners continue. Many alignment activities and updates of the personnel safety system in many areas also continue. Preparation and plans are in full swing for the planned warm-up of the Central Helium Liquefier, scheduled to start on Aug. 1. Demolition in the Test Lab is in progress in areas of the old cleanroom, while the main concrete wall will be attacked next Monday. Progress of the Test Lab demolition work is necessary for the timely recovery of SRF testing in the Vertical Test Area and the Cryomodule Test Cave.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

In a recent paper, the problem of calculating many baryon states in lattice QCD is addressed. Two approaches are presented that allow the multi-baryon correlation functions to be determined in a computationally manageable amount of time. Examples are shown for systems with the quantum numbers of the light nuclei, such as helium, beryllium, carbon, oxygen and silicon.

Vehicle Back-up alarms
With all of the recent construction onsite, JLab workers are often confronted with back-up alarms – the beep-beep sounds – when construction equipment or JLab trucks and/or golf carts are backing up. So what do you do about it? Some take it as they do yellow traffic lights at an intersection – racing through the hazard zone rather than stopping and giving way. However, the appropriate response is to stay or get clear of the backing vehicle.

Once you hear the back-up alarm, never try to cross behind the vehicle; give the backing vehicle a safe path in which to maneuver. For the backing vehicle, you may be in one of several of the driver’s blind spots, so don’t assume the driver can see you. Move to a safe area to the side and away from the rear of the vehicle as quickly as you can. Yell, honk your vehicle's horn, wave your arms or do whatever you can to make the driver aware of your presence, if you cannot move out of the way.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

EEL Network Maintenance Planned for July 31
There will be a network maintenance period for the Experimental Equipment Lab on Tuesday, July 31, 5-7 p.m. Mezzanine telephones, Internet connectivity, printing and central services will be unavailable during the maintenance period. The IT Division will strive to make the outage as brief as possible. All network and internet connectivity will be restored no later than 7 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns about this planned work, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155. Should you need to report an emergency in the EEL during this time and the nearest phone is offline, use a cell phone to call 911; then immediately call the JLab Security cell phone at 757-342-9868 to advise officers of the 911 call and nature and location of the emergency. You may also report an emergency by activating the closest fire alarm box and then calling Security to advise officers of the situation.

JSA Initiatives Fund Proposals Deadline Nears
Proposals for support from the 2013 JSA Initiatives Fund program are due Aug. 3. Proposals with JLab principal investigators will be forwarded to Bob McKeown for the first round of review. Proposals with User PI's will be forwarded to Sebastian Kuhn for the first round of review. Details on the full application process can be found on the JSA website.

Kickball, Anyone?
This popular sport has expanded beyond the elementary school playground and is now available through several leagues in Hampton Roads. If you're interested in playing on a JLab-sponsored team, contact Casey Heck, by Friday, July 27. Games would be played on Wednesday evenings in Hampton.

Governor's School Mentorship Program
Science Education is looking for amazing people to volunteer to be a Governor’s School Mentor for the 2012 - 2013 academic school year for student work at JLab. The mentorship will begin in early September 2012 and concludes at the end of May 2013. The students will work an average of five hours per week, for a total of 35 hours per quarter (9 weeks). Science Education will take care of all training and orientation. If you would like to volunteer or have questions, contact Brita R. Hampton, x7633.

JLab Community Invited to Intern Poster Session on Aug. 3
The JLab community is invited to attend the 2012 Summer Interns Poster Session planned for Friday, Aug. 3, 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the CEBAF Center lobby. More than 35 participants of this year's High School Summer Honors Internship Program, the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program and the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program will be on hand with posters they developed based on their work or research projects. The students are eager to explain and discuss their work and questions by members of the lab community are encouraged.

Tracking Thomas at JLab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the JLab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Congratulations this week go to Michelle Shinn and Deborah Dowd, who were the first to correctly identify the location for July 18. Honorable mentions go to Samika Hawkins, Tom Powers and Dick Owen. Check out the Tracking Thomas webpage for a better view of his last location and this week's new mystery photo.
