12 GeV Upgrade

The klystron has demonstrated full power, continuous wave operation; gain and bandwidth are improved over what was measured on the first unit. New delivery schedules for the klystrons and cathode power supplies have been received from the vendors and incorporated into the Project status schedule. Twelve niobium cavities for the 12 GeV cryomodules have been received; the vendor has provided an updated schedule which shortens the overall delivery timeline by six months. Deliveries of the 4-meter dipole magnets for beam transport have reached 22 of the 36 in the contract. More than 40 of the corrector dipole magnets have been received.

Physics

In Hall C, commissioning of Q-weak has started. The Q-weak target was filled for the first time and is in operation. The target has taken beam currents up to 50 microamps, and using the high-power heater, the target has been operated at powers corresponding to over 150 microamps, the nominal operating current of the Q-weak experiment. This target has now set the record for the the highest-power cryotarget. Commissioning of the Compton polarimeter is proceeding, with the first detection of back-scattered photons from collisions between the laser and electron beam.

AIP State Department Fellowship Application Deadline is Nov. 1
Qualified scientists at any stage of their careers who are U.S. citizens, have a Ph.D. in physics or closely related fields, are members of one or more of AIP’s 10 member societies and are eligible to receive appropriate security clearances are encouraged to apply. Final interviews will take place early in 2011 and the 12-month Fellowship term will begin in September 2011. For more information and to apply, visit the AIP website.

Accelerator

The accelerator has been delivering beam to all three halls. Last week, the machine energy and optics were fine tuned. On Thursday, beam line vacuum valve 2L17 faulted and would not open, which prevented beam delivery for several hours. The Arc2 box supply kept tripping off over the weekend. On Monday, the box power supply for Arc2 was replaced. The injector was optimized for three-beam operations.

Free-Electron Laser

FEL staffers continued to study the performance of the ultraviolet FEL and push the average power for comparison to 3D models. The DOE Basic Energy Sciences proposal for injector and accelerator research and development is now in final review for submission next week.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

The first experimental results from proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are causing much excitement in the nuclear physics community. Understanding the dynamics of strong interactions and the mechanism of hadron production at these energies is a major challenge that must be addressed before such processes can be used in the search for new particles like the Higgs boson.  Recent theoretical work <arXiv:1009.2559> shows that the concept of transverse nucleon structure (generalized parton distributions), widely used to describe electron scattering experiments at JLab energies, provides crucial insights into the partonic initial state of high-energy proton-proton collisions and suggests promising new strategies for the analysis of such reactions.

Environment, Safety, Health & Quality

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The most devastating forest fire in American history began on that same date: The Peshtigo Fire roared through northeast Wisconsin, burning 16 towns, killing 1,152 people, and scorching 1.2 million acres.

In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation. Since 1922, the nation has observed Fire Prevention Week, with many municipalities declaring October Fire Prevention Month. This year's theme is Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With. Each year, nearly 3,000 people die in U.S. home fires. In 2003-2006, roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from home fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. During this period, no smoke alarms were present in 40 percent of home fire deaths; in 23 percent of home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not sound. You can learn more smoke alarm facts by visiting the link above or the National Fire Protection Association website.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Phone System Outage Tentatively Set for Tuesday
On Oct. 19, there will be a brief phone system outage affecting the accelerator site, the Test Lab and Radiation Control at 10 a.m. The phone system is being transferred to new fiber optic cabling routed around the TEDF construction site.

Network Outage Set for Tuesday
On Oct. 19, there will be a brief network interruption for the FEL (except controls), FEL trailers, the Test Lab, Radiation Control, and parts of buildings 87 and 89 at 5 p.m. This will allow for re-routing of fiber optic cabling in support of the TEDF construction project.

Discontinuation of Dial-up Modem Pool (RAS) Service
On Nov. 1,  the lab's dial up modem pool (RAS) service will be decommissioned. The service, once widely used for off-site access, has been effectively replaced by the Internet. Questions about remote access to lab resources can be directed to the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Announcements

Sentara Mobile Mammography Unit Onsite Dec. 6
The Sentara Mobile Mammography Unit will be at JLab on Monday, Dec. 6, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the ARC parking lot. This service is open to all employees as well as family members or friends, since personal health insurances will be billed. The procedure takes 15 minutes. To make an appointment, call 1-800-SENTARA (736-8272) or see the Screenings and Events section on the frontpage of the Sentara website.

U.S. Department of State Issues Europe Travel Alert
On Oct. 3, the State Department alerted U.S. citizens to the potential for terrorist attacks in Europe. Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks. European governments have taken action to guard against a terrorist attack and some have spoken publicly about the heightened threat conditions. This Travel Alert expires on Jan. 31, 2011.

The JLab Travel Services office registers all business travelers with the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy when DOE foreign travel approval is requested. If you are traveling to Europe on personal leave, you should register through the State Department's travel registration website. Travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions at the Travel website or by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444 from elsewhere in the world. For further information on safety tips while traveling abroad, U.S. citizens should also consult the U.S. Department of State website.
