12 GeV Upgrade

The first two niobium cavities for cryomodule construction have been received from the vendor; inspection of those units has begun. Nine of the cryomodule helium vessels (eight are needed for each cryomodule) have been received. The first cryomodule vacuum vessel has been received and is being inspected. Low-level radiofrequency fabrications remain well ahead of schedule. The final shipment of beamline quadrupole magnets has been received. Five more 4-meter beam transport dipole magnets have been shipped from the vendor. All open issues have been closed from the review of the “box” power supplies for the beam transport dipole magnets. Testing of the first article klystron has been delayed until early August.

JSA Initiatives Fund Proposals Due Friday
Proposals for Initiatives Fund support for fiscal year 2011 are due to the SURA Chief of Strategic Services, Elizabeth Lawson, by Friday, Aug. 6. Members of the JLab user community, JLab researchers and staff, others who can make a unique contribution to the lab's research, education, and development and technology transfer missions are eligible to submit. Criteria and full instructions can be found on the JSA website.

Pre-Applications Due for Early Career Research Program
DOE is accepting proposals for the second year of the DOE Office of Science Early Career Research Program to support the research of outstanding scientists early in their careers. Up to $15 million in funding will be awarded in 2011 to support at least 50 early career researchers for five years at U.S. academic institutions and DOE national laboratories. Pre-applications are mandatory and are due by 4 a.m. EDT on Friday, Aug. 13.

Accelerator

The accelerator was running well. More than three shifts were used for beam studies and maintenance when the halls did not take beam. On Thursday evening, a storm dropped the injector and the radiofrequency system in the north linac to restricted access; operations personnel quickly recovered the machine. Over the weekend, 135 microAmps continuous wave beam was established to the Hall C beam dump for Q-weak.

Free-Electron Laser

Last week, the FEL team successfully transported 1milliAmp of continuous wave beam (18 milliHertz and 60 picoCoulombs) through the ultraviolet electron beamline. This success, on as short a timescale as it was achieved, is due to a remarkably thorough and careful installation process by the team. FEL staffers are now engaged in the installation of the small-gap wiggler chamber and diagnostic equipment.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Redhat Enterprise Linux Version 3 Support Ending
Redhat will stop support for the Redhat Enterprise Linux 3 version of its operating system in October. As a result, JLab will stop supporting RHEL3 on Oct. 1. If you are running a RHEL3 system, plan to upgrade to RHEL5 no later than Oct. 1. Installation CDs are available from the IT Division Helpdesk, which is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you have questions about upgrading your system, contact the IT Helpdesk at x7155 or at helpdesk@jlab.org.
