12 GeV Upgrade

Details are being finalized for 12 GeV tunnel installation tasks scheduled for the Summer 2010 scheduled accelerator shutdown. The tasks are being coordinated with the other planned shutdown activities in order to understand resource constraints and identify possible work location conflicts in the tunnel. The installation contract for the west arc low conductivity water (LCW) header has been awarded and the work will be done in this time period. Efforts continue to coordinate 12 GeV assembly space and storage needs with the JLab facilities management group. Off-site storage and workspace has been obtained to support 12 GeV activities such as some Hall D detector fabrication, and temporary storage for accelerator magnet stands and cryomodule components.

Theory Center

The Lattice 2010 conference, the principle venue for the propagation of the newest scientific results to the international lattice community, took place recently in Sardinia, Italy. Among the highlights was an invited topical plenary talk describing work done in the Theory Center on hadron spectroscopy. This work, performed in collaboration with Trinity College, Dublin, has been core to the JLab program of understanding the spectrum of QCD through lattice gauge theory calculations, and has led to a recent publication in Physical Review Letters <arXiv:0909.0200>.

Accelerator

On June 22, the accelerator energy was changed from 5.056 to 5.562 Gev. The Pockels cell in the injector was replaced to provide better performance. During the week and over the weekend, the accelerator had some downtime. Two Central Helium Liquefier trips and subsequent beam recovery, vacuum issues with zone 1L06, Arc7A box supply problems, and machine tuning took up about five shifts of beam time.

Free-Electron Laser

The FEL team received notice from the Department of Energy that its proposal for JLAMP had been rejected although DOE encouraged the team to submit individual proposals in seven areas of accelerator/optics R&D associated with future light sources. The team continues to make progress toward getting the UV system lasing next month.

Environment, Safety, Health & Quality

With holiday weekend cookouts upon us, take extra care when using lighter fluids to start solid fuel grills. Never use gasoline.

- Follow the instructions on the lighter fluid container.
- Do not allow children in the area during starting procedures.
- Do not add starter fluid to a grill that is already burning to "help it along" –  this will cause flash back –  where the flames travel back up the fluid stream and catch the container on fire while still in your hand. This could cause the container to explode. Imagine the injuries and damage from such an event.
- Have a fire extinguisher close by when cooking out.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Redhat Enterprise Linux Version 3 Support Ending Redhat will stop support for the Redhat Enterprise Linux 3 version of its operating system in October. As a result, JLab will stop supporting RHEL3 on Oct. 1. If you are running a RHEL3 system, plan to upgrade to RHEL5 no later than Oct. 1. Installation CDs are available from the IT Division Helpdesk, which is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you have questions about upgrading your system, contact the IT Helpdesk at x7155 or at helpdesk@jlab.org.

Personal Dosimeter Change-Out Set for June 30 The semi-annual personal dosimeter change-out will take place June 30. To ensure that your dosimeter is available for the change-out during this busy vacation, holiday and business travel season, everyone with a personal dosimeter is asked to place it in its assigned rack when not in use and especially before leaving the lab for an extended absence. If you have questions, contact Becky Mosbrucker, x7236.

Onnes and SURA Roads Close Briefly Today Subcontractors will be saw cutting across sections of both SURA and Onnes Roads today, June 30. Each road will be closed for a period of about two hours each to complete the cutting. One road will be closed for cutting and then re-open; then the other road will close. Access to the Accelerator Site will be maintained at all times.
