Radioactive Material Disposal
RadCon is implementing a new policy during the Winter Scheduled Accelerator Down. RadCon waste cans for disposal of radioactive material will be placed in beam enclosure areas and buildings where work with radioactive material occurs. The containers will be placed in the following locations: North Linac; South Linac; BSY; FEL; Halls A, B, C; Physics Storage Building; EEL and Test Lab.

These waste bins are for disposal of beamline and other hardware that is known/expected to be radioactive. The bins are labeled with reminders about prohibited materials. Do not dispose of materials in these containers that are not potentially radioactive (items that were not subject to activation), or any items listed on the prohibited items list. Standard (non-radiological) waste cans in these locations should be used for materials known not to be radioactive (materials not subject to beam-on conditions).

RadCon will check the bins routinely. For disposal of large items, contact RadCon directly. If you have any questions about use of the containers, contact David Hamlette at 876-1743.

Copier Replacement Schedule Delayed
Several hardware issues have impacted the schedule for the copier replacement work being conducted this week. In order to minimize the impact to users as much as possible, Copy Center staff is delaying the installation of additional new copiers until all known issues are resolved.

The work schedule has been updated accordingly, and it's expected that all old machines will be replaced by the end of the week. For the updated schedule, as well as instructions on how to update your drivers, see the copier replacement document. For questions regarding the scheduling of this work, contact Walt Akers.

12 GeV Upgrade

The January 2010 scheduled accelerator shutdown started at the end of December, and tunnel installation work for the 12 GeV Upgrade is in progress. Penetrations have been opened in preparation for the new radiofrequency waveguide installations. Base plate swaps for the new cryomodules are near completion. Electrical power tie-ins to support the civil construction for the Central Helium Liquefier (CHL) building addition and the Hall D Complex have been completed. Additional 12 GeV work planned for this shutdown period include Arc 10 stand layout with anchor installation and the west arc low-conductivity water (LCW) header installations.

Physics

JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program
Jefferson Science Associates, LLC, is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 academic year JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program. The application deadline is Jan. 22, 2010.

JSA/JLab Sabbatical Support Program
JSA is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 academic year JSA/JLab Sabbatical Support Program. The application deadline is Jan. 22, 2010.

Accelerator

During the holiday break, some scheduled work was performed. The injector vacuum was monitored, 12 GeV baseplates were installed, pallets were staged at the northeast Stub Dump and the energy-recovery setup was removed. There were scheduled power outages in support of new construction; most Linux systems were patched; and devfs memory was restored to full capacity.

Free-Electron Laser

The FEL was shut down over the holidays. The FEL team is preparing for installation of the SL-21 module in zone 2.

Theory Center

In a recent study <arXiv:0912.1942 [hep-ph]> it has been found that the coupling to the ρ meson production channel leads to a fair accounting of the exclusive charged pion cross section at large angles. Such a treatment provides an explanation of the s-7 scaling of the cross section (where s is the total center of mass energy squared) in the JLab energy range (up to 12 GeV) that follows from the constraints of unitarity, but does not rely directly on quark degrees of freedom.

Food for Thought: Remaining Focused at Work
Maintaining focus is key to productivity and safety. Focusing on the task - what the task is intended to do and how you want to accomplish it - will help you complete the task more quickly and safely. Here are several tips for focusing on your work:

  • Take the bigger jobs first while you are full of energy, stick a small job in between two larger jobs.
  • Focus on your final goal with the job you are working on.
  • Make sure that you have all of the tools handy to achieve the completion of the job.
  • Do as many jobs as you can finish in the time you have allotted.
  • Don't let your mind wander to other things that need to be done - add them to your list of things to do and schedule them in.
  • As your energy drains, take a break and re-energize; even if the break is only for 10 minutes, it will give you new vitality.
