12 GeV Upgrade

The 12 GeV Upgrade project encompasses accelerator subsystems, equipment for the experimental halls and civil construction, which share technical connections as well as manpower resources and geographical locations. An integrated installation schedule is being developed with input from all groups, including current 6 GeV operations. To support the project installation plan, which includes up to five commissioned cryomodules in the South Linac by November 2011, some equipment installation (such as radiofrequency waveguides) is being planned for the upcoming FY10 scheduled accelerator down periods.

Accelerator

The accelerator delivered beam until the accelerator site lost power at roughly 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, due to a ground fault outside the lab. The accelerator was restored by 10 p.m. the following day. Beam delivery to the halls resumed during Thursday’s owl shift. At around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, the accelerator site lost power again.

Free-Electron Laser

FEL staff performed several tests of injector physics this week, despite losing a day of running to an AC power crash. Significant measurements were performed on the injector to characterize the effect of laser pulse shape on the emittance and energy spread of the beam. Several mirror samples were exposed to harmonic flux for analysis at Stanford. Installation of the ultraviolet beamline was finished, but delays in magnet trim cards prevented a beam test this week; it will be done next week. FEL staffers also completed assembly of the spare high-voltage DC gun.

Theory Center

The International Lattice Data Grid is an effort to share the data generated from large-scale lattice QCD simulations, thereby enancing the scientific value of the data. JLab has been a key player in the ILDG from its inception and currently hosts and operates some parts of the U.S. ILDG infrastructure, as described in a new publication <arXiv:0910.1692 [hep-lat]>.  JLab staff have already published data generated under its 2007 INCITE allocation and plan further publications after the initial analysis is complete.

Flu Vaccines Update
Seasonal Flu Vaccine: The lab's supply of the seasonal flu vaccine has been completely used. No additional vaccine is expected.

H1N1 Vaccine: JLab Occupational Medicine is an approved H1N1 vaccination site, but no vaccine has been provided, and there is no way to know when, or if, the supply will arrive. Employees who have access to vaccine from other sources should not wait for JLab's program.

SURA Road Closed Thursday for South Connector Road Striping
The new South Connector Road in front of CEBAF Center is nearing completion. The final step is putting down roadway striping and installing traffic signs. Roadway striping will require the closure of SURA Road (commonly called Flag Alley) on Thursday, Oct. 29. Traffic will be re-routed between the EEL Building and the Test Lab.

Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 65 percent of reported home fire deaths in 2000-2004 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. In standard type battery-powered smoke alarms, the batteries need to be replaced at least once every year and the whole unit replaced every 8–10 years. In hard-wired, battery back-up smoke alarms, the batteries need to be checked monthly and replaced at least once every year.  In addition, the test button should be used every month or so to make certain the unit is working, and the battery has sufficient power.

Don't remember the last time you changed the battery? The Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery campaign (sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Energizer, and a network of 6,200 fire departments) encourages Americans to change the batteries in their smoke alarms when they spring forward or fall back for Daylight Saving Time. Take the opportunity to reset your smoke alarms with fresh batteries this weekend.

ES&H Manual Update
Several ES&H Manual documents have been recently updated. These documents were rewritten to reflect current contract requirements, incorporate current event reporting requirements and include updated technology to streamline the process. All of these documents, listed below, can be found on the ES&H Manual Table of Contents 5000 - Investigation, Reporting, and Recordkeeping webpage.

Updates were made to ES&H Manual Chapter 5200 and its appendices:

JLab Wireless Access Changes
On Saturday, Nov. 14, the CNI group will upgrade JLab's wireless network. This new system will allow the group to expand coverage and increase security.

After Nov. 14:

• If you have a current JLab username and password, connect to the wireless network 'jlab'. You then must register your laptop by going to http://reggie.jlab.org.
• If you do not have a JLab username and password, connect to the wireless network 'jlab_guest'. You will need the encryption key, which can be obtained by contacting the Helpdesk at x7155.

Tips for Curtailing Spam
Getting a lot of spam in your e-mail inbox? JLab has contracted with MXLogic to filter viruses and spam out of incoming e-mail. There are several methods you can employ to further curtail the amount of spam that reaches your inbox. The simplest method is to forward spam messages to spam@mxlogic.com - this trains the filters at MXLogic to recognize such messages as spam; it may take a few forwarded e-mails to work. Additional, more involved steps can be found on the JLab E-mail Filtration Services webpage.
