12 GeV Upgrade

Civil construction for the 12 GeV Upgrade continues to progress. On the Central Helium Liquefier (CHL) Building Addition, the structural steel work is complete and roofing started this week. The fire sprinkler piping and the concrete masonry (CMU) wall adjacent to the existing building have been installed. The CMU wall provides an acoustical barrier from the CHL #2 compressors to the adjacent building. On the Hall D Complex, the Hall D excavation is complete and the mud slab has been placed. The mud slab is a thin layer of concrete under the waterproofing for the concrete floor slab. The contractor is also continuing to install the utility distribution systems: water, electric and communications.

Physics

APS April Meeting Abstract Submission Deadline is Oct. 23
The 2010 APS April Meeting will take place at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. Because the April Meeting will be held in conjunction with the annual winter meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), it has been moved to February. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is Friday, Oct. 23, at 5 p.m. EDT (2 p.m. PDT).

AIP State Deaprtment Fellowship Application Deadline is Nov. 1
This fellowship is intended to enhance the S&T capacity of the State Department by enabling at least one scientist annually to work at the Department’s Washington, D.C. headquarters for a one-year term. This is a unique opportunity for a scientist to contribute scientific and technical expertise to the department and raise awareness of the value of scientific input. In turn, scientists broaden their experience by interacting with policymakers in the federal government and learning about the foreign policy process. Accelerator

The accelerator had been running well with low trip rates. Hall A line orbits were optimized, which eliminated the ep ion chamber trips. On Friday, the Hall C beam dump cooling water pump developed a leak. The water leak had worsened Saturday, and the leaking pump was turned off. The secondary pump (with limited cooling capacity) was turned on. A plan is already in place to fix the leaking pump.

Free-Electron Laser

George Neil and Gwyn Williams are both giving talks at the Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation Workshop in Australia this week. George also presented a talk at the International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves last week in South Korea. Good progress is being made in final checkout of the ultraviolet beamline before beam transport. A problem with the machine protection fast-shutdown system was discovered last week; a solution that greatly improves the robustness of the system was proposed and reviewed externally and is being implemented. Machine setups appropriate for UV operations are being tested.

Wrapping up the theme of National Preparedness Month, the final step in disaster preparedness is to "Be Informed."

There are important differences among potential emergencies that will impact the decisions you make and the actions you take. Preparedness must now account for man-made disasters as well as natural ones. Find out what kinds of disasters, both natural and man-made, are most likely to occur in your area. Knowing what to do during an emergency is an important part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count. In addition, learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by your state and local government.

SRF Colloquium Set for Oct. 1
A special colloquium, High-Field Losses in SRF Cavities, will be presented by Gianluigi Ciovati of the Accelerator Division SRF Institute and recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium.


Performance Appraisals - Review Process Begins Oct. 1
September 30 not only marks the end of the fiscal year, but it is also the end of the FY09 performance appraisal period. The appraisal process begins on October 1 and the first step is for supervisors to activate appraisals. The timeline is posted and can be viewed directly from this email by clicking on the link. The Lab-wide goal is to have all appraisals completed by Dec. 16. The online appraisal system is composed of a predetermined sequence of events and is user friendly. However, if you are new to the system or need a refresher, there is a tutorial slideshow and a frequently asked questions document. In addition, formal classes can be added by request. If you have specific questions, call Bruce Ullman at x7170 or Cassandra Andrews at x7068.

Blood Drive set for Tuesday, Oct. 6
The next American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend. Walk-ins are welcome; however, making an appointment allows the Red Cross to schedule adequate staff for their visit. Volunteers are also needed to help with the blood drive. Last Chance to Register for Oct. 8 Golf Tourney
Dust off those clubs! It's time for the JLab 2009 Fall Golf Tournament. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Green Course) in Williamsburg.
