12 GeV Upgrade

At the request of the Office of Nuclear Physics, Daniel Lehman, Director of the Office of Project Assessment in DOE's Office of Science, will convene a team of 22 experts plus 10 observers in an Independent Project Review of the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade Project to be held at JLab on Nov. 27-29. The purpose of the review is to assess all aspects of the project in order to re-establish the DOE Performance Baseline resulting from a $16 million reduction in FY12 congressional appropriation.

Physics

The Hall C Short Orbit Spectrometer has been stripped of stairways, walkways and other parts, leaving only the shield house supported by the base frame. The raised concrete floor in the hall is almost completely removed, in anticipation of installation, next year, of the rails for the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer.

Free-Electron Laser

The FEL team is preparing for operations early in 2013 and has completed the bakeout of the injector in preparation for high-voltage conditioning next week. Work continued on the detailed design of the new gun with a load-lock for cathode replacement, and the first conceptual designs for a new booster were presented this week.

Engineering

Hall D Cryogenics Design and Installation
The major piping systems inside the cryogenic plant building, including warm helium, water and air, are virtually complete. The electrical and control systems for the plant are in the final stages of checkout. The cold transfer line system from the plant into the hall is nearly complete, and the Cryogenics group is starting installation of the prefabricated warm transfer lines. The cryogenic distribution box that connects the transfer line to the four superconducting coils was completed and installed on top of the solenoid, and it is now in the final stages of being connected and leak checked.

Central Helium Liquefier-1 and Linac Summer Shutdown Work
Maintenance items on the CHL1 cryogenics plant have been progressing, including the rebuilding of the large warm gas control valves and the replacement of the soft parts in the vacuum pump-out ports on the transfer lines and u-tubes across the system.

CHL2 Warm Compressor and Warm Gas/Oil/Water/Air Management Systems
Commissioning will begin sometime after the new year.

CHL2 300-4.5 Kelvin Cold Box Systems
The field instrumentation cabling was installed and is undergoing checkout. Work continues on the tie-in piping, and the group is expecting Linde personnel to return to continue their work after Thanksgiving.

End Station Refrigerator and Cryogenic Test Facility Refrigerator
The restart of the CTF cryogenics plant was delayed due to ongoing Test Lab construction. CTF system cleanup was started last week. The group will be restarting the plant soon. The ESR remains off and warm.

Clarification of JLab Mailing Addresses
Some publications that are delivered to JLab are limited to a four-line address maximum for mailed materials. Due to these restrictions, the following address format for JLab U.S. Postal Service mailing addresses is preferred:
Name
Jefferson Lab
Street Address STE XX (XX is your postal suite)
Newport News, VA  23606

This address format is now shown in the Staff Search and/or JList functions.

Heat Stress in the Fall
Unusually warm days following a cool period are common in the fall months, and those warm days hold the potential for heat stress. If the cool period has been around for a couple of weeks, the body loses its acclimatization and can be more adversely affected compared to the middle of summer. On hot days in the middle of a cool season, be extra cautious when working, especially in areas that are a little warmer than normal, and also remember to stay hydrated at all times. Heat stress can sneak up on you when you least expect it!

Announcements

Toys For Tots Toy Drive Planned
As in years' past, JLab will participate in the U.S. Marine Corps' annual Toys For Tots toy drive, beginning in late November.

Children’s Holiday Party Set for Dec. 8
The Jefferson Lab Activities Group is hosting the Children’s Holiday Party on Saturday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the CEBAF Center lobby. All children of JLab employees, contractors and users are invited. Each family is asked to bring a new, unopened toy donation for Toys For Tots. Santa Claus plans to drop by with JAG Dog Training Club member, Dan Young, Physics Division, and his two Samoyeds, Nikko and Tally (aka JLab's Santa dogs), for photographs and messages from the children. Games, craft activities, light snacks and drinks will be provided. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Lab Scientists and Administrators Invited to Virginia STEAM Academy Colloquium
Everyone at JLab is invited to a talk about the Virginia Science, Technology, Engineering and Applied Mathematics (VA STEAM) Academy at 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, in the CEBAF Center auditorium. Judy Stewart, VA STEAM Academy co-founder, will discuss the creation, development and critical need for the academy, which is slated to open its doors to its first freshman class in 2014. The four-year residential program is intended to be a uniquely challenging experience for high-school students with ability and potential in science, engineering, or math. A VA STEAM Academy and JSA/Jefferson Lab Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be signed just prior to this colloquium, to establish a partnership that will provide outstanding educational opportunities to VA STEAM faculty and students. Cookies and coffee will be served in the CEBAF Center lobby beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Tracking Thomas at JLab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the JLab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Congratulations this week go to Doug Higinbotham, Annie Tran and Samika Hawkins, who were the first to correctly identify the location for Nov. 14. Honorable mentions go to Ron Bartek, Isadoro Carlino, Narciso Gomez, Marcy Stutzman, Harry Fanning, Kelly Tremblay, Kevin Banks, Robert Martin, Elaine Zuchowicz, Michelle Shinn, Debra Brand and Dick Owen. Check out the Tracking Thomas webpage for a better view of his last location and this week's new mystery photo.
