12 GeV Upgrade

Construction of the five magnets for the Hall C Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) continues. Procurement of cold mass parts for the small horizontal bend dipole magnet has started in preparation for assembly of the finished coils. Winding of the fourth and last coil for the Q1 quadrupole magnet is complete, and preparation of magnet laminations is continuing. Soldering of the copper stabilizer to the superconducting SSC cable for the Q2, Q3 and dipole magnets is nearly complete. Production winding tooling for the dipole magnet has been assembled and used to wind a 1-meter prototype of the innermost dipole coil. The wheels and bogies for the support structure are being assembled and checked at the factory before shipment, and tenders for the assembly contract for the support structure are being readied. The several hundred tons of steel yokes for the Q2, Q3 and dipole magnets have been completed and shipped from the vendor and will arrive in about a month.

Physics

JSA Accepting Applications for 2013 Outstanding Nuclear Physicist Award
The JSA Programs Committee established the Outstanding Nuclear Physicist Award to recognize individuals who have made outstanding and sustained contributions, including technical achievements, to experimental and/or theoretical research related to the nuclear physics program at JLab. The biennial award consists of a certificate and a $10,000 honorarium, presented to the honoree at the JLab Annual Users Group meeting. Travel for the recipient is provided by JSA. Nomination packages are due by Jan. 11, 2013.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

Electron scattering experiments at JLab with 6 GeV energy have established the existence of short-range nucleon correlations in nuclei - configurations in which protons and neutrons are much closer to each other than on average and experience strong short-distance interactions. A recent theoretical study predicts similar short-range correlations also between quarks in the proton, namely in the "sea" of quark-antiquark pairs that is created by the chromodynamic fields. These correlations have a distinctive effect on the proton's dynamical response and could be observed in high momentum-transfer experiments at 12 GeV or higher energies, opening up a new way of studying the role of Quantum Chromodynamics in hadron structure.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Resolving ES&H Concerns
To ensure the welfare and productivity of its workforce, JLab has several mechanisms for employees, or anyone who comes into contact with the lab, to report issues potentially affecting the safety of workers, visitors, lab neighbors or the environment without fear of retaliation or reprisal. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 lists a variety of mechanisms for resolving and reporting ES&H concerns and for preventing similar concerns from occurring in the future. Here is a list of the options you have for resolving an ES&H concern:

• If possible, resolve the ES&H concern yourself;
• If you are unable to resolve the concern yourself, refer the concern to your supervisor and management chain using the mechanisms outlined here;
• You may also consult your Safety Warden, Division Safety Officer, your representative to the Worker Safety Committee, or contact an ESH&Q staff member directly for any ES&H concerns you may have;
• If you would like to remain anonymous, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, use JLab’s Employee Concerns Program;
• If one or more of the above steps have not resulted in resolution of the concern, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, you may also use the formal DOE Employee Concerns Management System hotline at 800-676-3267; or use DOE's Differing Professional Opinion process through the form found in DOE Order 442.2.

Once your concern has been addressed, communicate any lessons learned to your staff, co-workers, supervisors and your Division Lessons Learned Coordinator. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 offers more information on concern resolution.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

CNI Systems Maintenance Tuesday, Oct. 16, 5-10 p.m.
The CNI group is planning a maintenance period for Tuesday, Oct. 16, 5-10 p.m. During this maintenance time, the Zimbra mail servers will be unreachable for about 15 minutes while they are restarted to apply a configuration change. The scratch files server (jlabscr, /scratch) will be unavailable for approx 30 minutes while additional hardware is installed. As a result of this upgrade, central services that mount /scratch may need to be rebooted. This includes jlabl1-4, and the public Linux systems, publ1-3. Additionally, Firefox and Adobe Flash Player will be updated and Windows and Linux patches will be released. Plan on rebooting your systems as soon as is convenient once the patches have been installed. Although no outage is expected, maintenance is being done on the file servers containing the central CUE directories (J:, K:, L:, M:, /home, /group, /site, /apps). Volunteers Needed for JAG Oktoberfest
JLab employees, their immediate family members and users are invited to the Jefferson Activities Group Oktoberfest, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 24, 3-6 p.m. in the field behind the SURA Residence Facility. The Oktoberfest will feature Brunswick stew, chili, grilled foods and beverages, and games and activities for all ages. Volunteer participation is critical to the event's success - volunteer for just one hour and party the other two! The best volunteer spots are taken early, so sign up today.

Last Chance to Register for the JLab 2012 Fall Golf Outing
The tourney will kick off at noon with a shotgun start on Friday, Oct. 19, at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Green Course) in Williamsburg, Va. The format will be a handicapped Captains Choice. Each foursome must include at least two JLab employees. The cost for JLab employees (you qualify if you receive a paycheck from JSA - Jefferson Science Associates, LLC) is $60. The cost for non-JLab employees is $75. The cost includes range balls, green fees, cart, food after the tournament and the prize fund. Mulligans will be sold at the course. Spy Games Colloquium and Public Lecture on Oct. 17
Bruce Held, Director of the Office of Intelligence & Counterintelligence at DOE will present "The Real James Bond: Sidney Reilly and the Origins of Modern Espionage" in a colloquium and public lecture in the CEBAF Center auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. Sidney Reilly was the true-life model for the fictional super-spy James Bond. But Bond’s espionage exploits pale in comparison to Reilly’s actual exploits. The speaker, Held, is responsible for all intelligence and counterintelligence activities throughout the DOE complex, including over 30 intelligence and counterintelligence offices nationwide.

Wear Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Event
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Dilon Technologies is hosting a presentation by a breast cancer survivor whose disease was diagnosed by Dilon's breast-specific gamma-imaging technology, but was missed by both mammography and ultrasound. The gathering will take place Thursday, Oct. 18, at 2:30 p.m. in ARC room 125. JLab staff and users are invited to attend. Raffle tickets will also be available for a handmade blanket in honor of breast cancer awareness, with all proceeds going to Beyond Boobs.

Sign Up to Play Cornhole at Oktoberfest!
The annual Oktoberfest, held by the Jefferson Activities Group, is set for Wednesday, Oct. 24, 3-6 p.m. This year's event will also feature a Cornhole Tournament. You must pre-register to compete.
