12 GeV Upgrade

Civil construction has made noticeable progress over the last month.  On the Central Helium Liquefier Building Addition, metal siding installation is nearly complete. CEBAF Boulevard is planned to re-open during the second week of April. On the Hall D Complex, the first lift of the Hall D concrete walls is complete, bringing them to a height of approximately 15 feet. The second lift will take the concrete walls to a height of approximately 30 feet. On top of the concrete walls will be 10 feet of structural steel frame walls to complete the full height of the walls at 40 feet. In addition to the JLab construction webcam, the Hall D progress can be viewed on the construction contractor’s webcam.

Physics

On Friday, the installation of the PREX experiment E06-002, measuring the neutron radius in 208Pb to 1 percent, was finally completed in Hall A. During the weekend, the commissioning activities were successfully initiated.

Nuclear Science and Engineering Scholarships and Fellowships
DOE is offering scholarships and fellowships as part of its efforts to recruit and train the next generation of nuclear scientists and engineers. The Nuclear Energy University Programs (NEUP) will provide approximately $5 million for scholarships and fellowships for students enrolled in two-year, four-year and graduate engineering and science programs related to nuclear energy. Undergraduate scholarships will average $5,000 per year, and the maximum award for fellowships will be $50,000 per year. Applications are due by April 26. DOE anticipates notifying students by June 2010 of its selections with awards planned for July 2010.

Accelerator

The accelerator has been running well, with a very low radiofrequency trip rate. Operations personnel delivered beam to Hall B last week. A spin dance was performed to optimize the beam polarization. Over the weekend, beam was set up for Hall A with low current for commissioning of the PREX experiment.

Free-Electron Laser

The FEL team has cooled down the injector to 2K, and a new cryomodule has been commissioned. The team is ready to begin bringing the electron beam up again, starting this week.

Theory Center

This week sees the first of several introductory lectures given by Leonard Gamberg, visiting professor from Penn State University, on the transverse spin and momentum structure of hadrons. Emphasis will be placed on the emerging role of time reversal odd effects in transverse spin and momentum correlations between partons and their description in terms of novel parton distribution and fragmentation functions. The lectures will summarize the key theoretical issues and experimental results that have led us to the present understanding and outline how JLab will contribute to the development of this field in the future.

Facilities Management and Logistics

JSA Administrative Policy 301.06 Traffic & Parking Management requires that vehicles park only in designated parking spaces. Many vehicles have not been in compliance with this policy, especially along the North Connector Road. Vehicles will be ticketed for parking violations in this area beginning Monday, March 29. Environment, Safety, Health & Quality

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration notes that 5,071 workers died on the job in 2008. "With every one of these fatalities, the lives of a worker's family members were shattered and forever changed. We can't forget that fact," said Hilda Solis, Secretary of Labor.

As a visible sign of its commitment to making America's workplaces safer, OSHA keeps a running tally of worker fatalities on the front page of its website. Many of the scrolling descriptions serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of taking on a task without putting you and your fellow employees' safety first. Here at JLab, we apply the steps of the Integrated Safety Management System in the planning and execution of work. These include defining the scope of work, analyzing the hazards, developing and implementing hazard controls, performing work within controls and providing feedback and continuous improvement.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Windows Power Management Now in Effect
On Tuesday, the lab began reducing its power draw (without impacting its mission) by putting Windows desktop computers into standby or sleep mode when they are not in use for long periods of time or not used after work hours. The computer can be awakened by either mouse movement or pressing any key on the keyboard. To minimize impact on those who choose to log into their systems remotely after hours, users will still have offsite access to their computer systems. These users can log in to https://cc.jlab.org/wakeonlan to wake their systems before attempting to remotely log into their onsite desktop. For more information, visit the website.

New Look for JLab Common User Environment
The CNI group is rearranging icons in the JLab-CUE program directory for all Windows users. This Windows program directory can be accessed by going to Start, All Programs, JLab-CUE. Check out the new look starting on Thursday, March 25. To see the new look, you may need to log out and back in late that morning.

Last Chance to Enter T-Shirt Design Contest
The deadline for submissions for the 25th Annual JLab T-shirt Design Contest is March 26. Submissions should be in color, on 8.5x11 paper and include a front (pocket) and back design. Submission rules and past winning designs are posted on the JAG website.

Frank Wilczek to Speak at William & Mary
Frank Wilczek, MIT professor and Nobel Prize Winner (2004), will speak at a William & Mary physics colloquium on Friday, March 26, at 4 p.m. The location is Millington Hall 150. The lecture is titled and described as: What is Space? - An empty stage, where the physical world of matter acts out its drama; an equal participant, that both provides background and has a life of its own; or the primary reality, of which matter is a secondary manifestation? Views on this question have evolved, and several times changed radically, over the history of science. Today, the third view is triumphant. Wilczek will discuss the new space, how we got to it, and where it points.

GEN101 Annual Standards of Conduct Training
The lab is nearing the deadline for all employees to complete a Conflict of Interest Disclosure form for 2010. The Contract requires the lab to have one on file for each employee. GEN101 training includes this form. If you have not yet completed the course, you must do so within the next two weeks.
