L'Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science
Now in its sixth year, the L'Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science program has announced the 2009 call for applications. This year, L'Oreal USA will award five women with grants of up to $60,000 each. Applicants are welcome from a variety of fields, including the life and physical/material sciences, computer science, engineering and mathematics. The deadline for applications is Oct. 31. For more information and to apply, visit the L'Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science website.

The AIP State Department Science Fellowship Program
This fellowship is intended to enhance the S&T capacity of the State Department by enabling at least one scientist annually to work at the Department’s Washington, D.C. headquarters for a one-year term. This is a unique opportunity for a scientist to contribute scientific and technical expertise to the department and raise awareness of the value of scientific input. In turn, scientists broaden their experience by interacting with policymakers in the federal government and learning about the foreign policy process. The deadline for applications is Nov. 1. For more information and to apply, visit the AIP website.

Accelerator

This period was marked by vigorous work on fixing myriad problems that always appear after such a long down. Some of the notable issues were replacement of a master oscillator source, a leaking vacuum feedthrough, several magnet shunt failures, and a Central Helium Liquefier Turbine #3 contamination problem. Accelerator staff achieved continuous wave beam to all three experimental halls on Sunday.

Free-Electron Laser (FEL)

FEL staff has turned on the electron beam and has begun setting up injector parameters. The cathode seems to have excess field emission despite efforts to process it. Although it may be necessary to replace the cathode in the future, FEL staff intends to continue setting up the machine for now.

Theory Center

The cost of generating gauge configurations with dynamical fermions is very high; but once given those configurations, the cost of changing the valence quark mass is relatively low. This means that if one has a consistent scheme within which to analyze chiral corrections, partially quenched QCD (pQQCD) is a cost-effective way to improve the statistical errors on the extracted physical quantities. A recent paper (arXiv:0810.3432 [hep-lat]) analyzes an extensive database of results for the nucleon mass in pQQCD, generated by the CP-PACS collaboration, with the conclusion that the "Adelaide" approach (finite range regularization) is clearly the preferred method for extracting physical results from data over a wide range of quark masses.

Environment, Safety, Health & Quality

Disposing of hazardous waste or chemicals must be performed in an appropriate manner. Recently, there have been incidents where people have left hazardous materials, sometimes in unlabeled containers, at the Safety Lab (Trailer 35) and other offices. The containers ranged from a few ounces to 55-gallon drums. These practices have far-reaching impacts such as:

  • Unknown chemicals/containers create a hazard for JLab employees;
  • There is a significant cost borne by JLab
            1) to determine the composition of an “unknown”
            2) for "special" disposal if it is not part of the normal waste types;
  • If it's radioactive and requires disposal;
  • Leaving containers on the doorstep may create compliance issues for "improper" waste storage, which could result in fines;
  • Spills from orphan containers open JLab to regulatory actions and fines in addition to significant cleanup costs;
  • Leaking orphan containers may cause environmental damage.

The proper disposal protocol is to make arrangements ahead of time with a person. Do not leave a voicemail or send an e-mail and then drop it off. The waste delivery must be made during regular hours and contents/containers must be properly identified and labeled. Contact Brett Lewis at x6254 or Jen Williams at x7882 to make arrangements to deliver your hazardous waste.

EH&S Manual Chapters 6730-6770 concern proper waste management techniques at JLab. These chapters and the individual subject areas they address are conveniently available on this EH&S Manual Table of Contents page. Always seek advice beforehand if you are unsure of the proper way to dispose of chemicals or other hazardous materials.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure (CNI)

Brief Nameserver Outage on Tuesday, Nov. 4
The primary system used to resolve names and IP addresses at the lab will be down for a few minutes on Tuesday evening starting at 5 p.m. The backup system will not be affected, so name resolution will still occur. Staff and users may see a slowdown when surfing the web and connecting to other systems during this time. Everything will be back to normal by 5:10 p.m.

JLab Community Invited to See New General Purpose Building
The new General Purpose Building (#36) is complete. To celebrate the opening of the eight-bay building, the Facilities and Logistics Management group is inviting the JLab community to visit it on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. You will be able to tour the building to see what a small portion of the building is being used for and find out about proposed uses for other portions of the building.

The building is adjacent to the South Access Building (#38) on the southeast corner of the Accelerator Site. It features eight roll-up and eight personnel access doors and has floor space that can be divided. It will be used to support lab projects, in addition to some of the space being used for general storage. Recently, Furniture Freestock (excess office furniture) moved into one of the bays. Other proposals currently being evaluated would move two accelerator support functions into portions of the building.

Parking is limited at Building 36. Lab staff without GERT or Rad Worker training will need someone with appropriate training to escort them onto the Accelerator Site and to the building.

Schedule Disposal of Your Excess Property Through Online Form
For your convenience, the web-based process eliminates the need for submiting paper forms and automatically generates a work request for pickup. The webpage also allows for the disposal of administrative property (chairs, book cases, tables and the like which are not included on your inventory).

Note that only the custodian can dispose of his or her assigned property. Keep items in your office or work space until picked up for disposal. If you have questions, contact the Jefferson Lab Property Office at x7348, x6270 or x7688.

GEN034 Expiration Notices
Over the next few weeks, you may receive automated e-mail messages about the upcoming expiration of GEN034, the Annual Security Awareness training course. As the name implies, this course is updated every year and all JLab employees are required to renew their training each year.

The automatic messages that you will receive refer to the 2008 version of Security Awareness Training and should be ignored unless you are a new employee or a new contractor. All new employees and contractors must complete the training on their start date.

The 2009 version of Security Awareness Training will be available soon. An e-mail will be sent when this updated version has been published. Once the 2009 version is published, everyone at the lab will have until the end of this year (2008) to renew their training.

Physics Nobel Laureate Speaks
John C. Mather will be the featured speaker for Old Dominion University's Nobel Laureate Public Lecture Series at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Mather 's lecture "From the Big Bang to the Nobel Prize and on to the James Webb Space Telescope and the Discovery of Alien Life," will explore the history of the universe, the birth of planets and stars and the existence of other Earth-like planets capable of sustaining life.
