12 GeV Upgrade

Assembly of the ninth and tenth (of 10) C100 cryomodules continues. Acceptance testing of the sixth C100 is underway in the Test Lab. Work on the new radiofrequency zones continues. Eight of the new high-power RF circulators were received. The new cryogenics systems for Hall D are being used to cool down the solenoid magnet. The 4.5K coldbox for the Central Helium Liquefier 2 is being prepared for commissioning next month. Assembly is underway of the cryogenics transfer line that will connect CHL2 to the linacs. Re-installation of the east spreader is nearly complete; the stands for the west spreader have been installed. Field mapping of the first three-meter-long ZA septum magnet is complete, and it met the specifications; it has been readied for installation. The second ZA septum magnet has been received. All of the new vertical stands for the beam transport system have been received. All Instrumentation & Controls/Safety systems were ready on schedule for the Hall D solenoid cooldown and linac cooldown. The Personnel Safety System is ready for certification next week.

Physics

2013 Outstanding Nuclear Physicist Award Deadline Nears
The JSA Programs Committee established the Outstanding Nuclear Physicist Award to recognize individuals who have made outstanding and sustained contributions, including technical achievements, to experimental and/or theoretical research related to the nuclear physics program at JLab. Nomination packages are due by Jan. 11.

APS April Meeting Abstracts Due
The deadline for abstracts for the APS April Meeting is Friday, Jan. 11. The meeting will be held in Denver, Co. In addition, the APS Topical Group for Hadronic Physics will hold its 2013 meeting in the same location, April 10-12; The deadline for GHP abstracts is Feb. 1.

The Flame Challenge: All About Time
The question for this year’s edition of the Flame Challenge, an international contest that asks scientists to communicate complex science in ways that interest and inform an 11-year-old, is "What is time?" Scientifically accurate entries will be judged by thousands of 11-year-olds in schools around the world. The winning scientists will be brought to New York to be honored in June at the World Science Festival. Entries can be written, video or graphic. The deadline for entries is March 1. For rules and other information, see the website.

Free-Electron Laser

In the first, shortened week of the new year, FEL staffers continued significant engineering design efforts on the gun upgrade and work on the ring resonator test.FEL team is preparing for operations early in 2013 and has completed the bakeout of the injector in preparation for high-voltage conditioning next week. Work continued on the detailed design of the new gun with a load-lock for cathode replacement, and the first conceptual designs for a new booster were presented this week.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A major review article on nucleon resonance structure in exclusive meson electroproduction has been compiled by theorists and experimentalists from the JLab community. The article presents a detailed account of the physics that can be addressed through N* structure studies in exclusive meson electroproduction, such as those planned in Hall B at 12 GeV. The review describes recent advances in reaction theory for extracting N* electrocouplings from meson electroproduction off protons, as well as advances in QCD-based approaches to their theoretical interpretation.

Engineering

The Machine Shop is presently manufacturing or continuing to manufacture:

  • Using the horizontal boring mill, Hall-B’s High Threshold Cerenkov Counter detector mirror assembly gluing jig - an aluminum contoured vacuum fixture used to glue four mirror sections together to form one twelfth of the whole mirror assembly;
  • Hall-B’s CLAS 12 HTCC Mold Mirror foam substrate Facet Block 1L and 1R, which are being cut to size on the shop’s five-axis machine;
  • The SPT support mounting brackets (four assemblies); and
  • The wire scanner vacuum YAG crystal and mirror assembly and beam viewer assembly for the FEL.

The shop has processed 114 job requests since Nov. 12.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Resolving ES&H Concerns
To ensure your welfare and productivity, JLab has several mechanisms for employees, or anyone who comes into contact with the lab, to report issues potentially affecting the safety of workers, visitors, lab neighbors or the environment without fear of retaliation or reprisal. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 lists a variety of mechanisms for resolving and reporting ES&H concerns and for preventing similar concerns from occurring in the future. Here is a list of the options you have for resolving an ES&H concern:

  • If possible, resolve the ES&H concern yourself;
  • If you are unable to resolve the concern yourself, refer the concern to your supervisor and management chain using the mechanisms outlined here;
  • You may also consult your Safety Warden, Division Safety Officer, your representative to the Worker Safety Committee, or contact an ESH&Q staff member directly for any ES&H concerns you may have;
  • If you would like to remain anonymous, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, use JLab’s Employee Concerns Program;
  • If one or more of the above steps have not resulted in resolution of the concern, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, you may also use the formal DOE Employee Concerns Management System hotline at 800-676-3267; or use DOE's Differing Professional Opinion process through the form found in DOE Order 442.2.

Once your concern has been addressed, communicate any lessons learned to your staff, co-workers, supervisors and your Division Lessons Learned Coordinator. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 offers more information on concern resolution.

Long Shutdown Safety Meeting and Vendor Fair
All lab employees are required to attend one of the four, brief Project Update and Safety Meeting sessions that will be given in the CEBAF Center auditorium
on Thursday, Jan. 10. See the announcement to determine your scheduled session time. In addition, there will be a Long Shutdown/12 GeV Upgrade project poster session and vendor fair in the CEBAF Center lobby and Room F113; Refreshments will be provided. For more information, see this OnTarget newsletter article.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

CNI Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday, Jan. 15
The CNI group is planning a maintenance period for 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15. During this time, several web servers will undergo a configuration update. This update should be transparent, but there may be intermittent outages. All web server updates will be complete by 7 p.m. Also, the group will be releasing Windows and Linux patches to JLab desktops. Plan on rebooting your desktop on Wednesday or Thursday to finalize the patch installation.

JLab ISDN Video Conferencing Is Changing
The lab's legacy ISDN (phone-based) video conferencing system will be discontinued on July 1 as part of the phone system upgrade. This affects only video conferences set up over ISDN phone lines; it has no effect on video conferences over the network. If you have ISDN video requirements beyond this date, contact the IT Division Helpdesk for assistance in transitioning to a newer system.
