12 GeV Upgrade

Spring is the beginning of many things. In the 12 GeV Upgrade Project, spring is evident by the many changes that have and will continue to occur. In Hall B, the space-frame modification is underway; Hall C has seen the installation of the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer rail with the assembly of the SHMS structure out for bid; and the Hall D Tagger area landscape continues to change with the installation of girder stands and magnet assembly. As the accelerator upgrades near completion, the Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) process is getting ready to kick off with the summer Director’s Review of the Integrated Commissioning Plan. The ARR process is designed to verify that the programs, people and equipment are in place to safely commission and perform routine operation of the accelerator.

Use On-Hook Dialing to Stop 911 Misdials & Wrong Numbers
Telecommunications staffers encourage everyone at JLab to use the on-hook dialing feature available on the Cisco IP phones, in order to eliminate 911 misdials and to reduce instances of misdialing other phone numbers.

Vote for Your Favorite JLab T-Shirt Design
Vote for your favorite submission in the 2013 JLab Annual T-Shirt Contest. Voting will remain open until April 12. The winning design will be unveiled at the lab's annual Run-A-Round, which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22.

Brown Bag Lunch Workshops with MIS: Thursday, April 4, 12:15 p.m., CC F113
Do you want to make the most out of Zimbra software for calendar and email? Did you miss the training last year and want to know how Zimbra works? Join MIS next week for a refresher workshop that will also cover mobile device integration, as well as various tips and tricks. MIS and the Computer Center will present the second monthly brown bag lunch workshop on Thursday, April 4, 12:15-1:15 p.m, in CEBAF Center room F113. Last Chance to Share Your Green Thumb in the JLab Garden Club Survey!
Here’s a "green idea" for employee participation in JLab’s sustainability efforts….. How about a JLab Community Garden right here on site! The idea is to provide the JLab workforce with an area to grow plants. If you're interested, take the Garden Club Survey on the JAG website. The cutoff date for the survey is March 31.

Picture of Shipping and Receiving Well-Wishers Scheduled
To make a poster for Bill Brisiel, a picture of his department coworkers and anyone else who would like to show support for Bill has been arranged for March 28, at noon. If you are interested in being included, make sure you are in front of Shipping and Receiving, Building 90, at noon on Thursday. Greg Adams will take the picture at 12:15 p.m. sharp.

JLab Property Custodians: Complete GEN 150 Refresher & Property Validation by March 31
By March 31, all JLab Property Custodians must complete Property Custodian Refresher Training (GEN 150). The GEN 150 training takes about 5 minutes to complete. It can be accessed from the web-based training page. (Be patient if the forward arrows are slow to appear.) Then access your Property Validation list via the link provided on the Property webpage. The Property Validation link is in the drop-down menu that becomes visible when you scroll over the Resources link in the LINKS column on the left. If you have property or property validation questions, contact the Property office at x7348, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. or email property@jlab.org.

Last Chance to Complete Key Validation
All JLab staff, users, students and subcontractors in possession of one or more JLab keys must validate each key issued to them, by March 31. Use the link to access the Key Validation system. Sign in, then follow the instructions on the screen. After completing the validation, be sure to click on the Submit button before logging out of the system (logout is in the upper right corner). Subcontractors with keys, but without JLab computer accounts, will be contacted by Dennis Merritt, the Facilities Management and Logistics locksmith. If you have any non-essential or non-functional JLab keys, return them to Dennis Merritt, Mail Stop 28G. If you have questions about the key validation process, contact Dennis Meritt.

Tango For Everyone
The JLab Tango Club is starting a new beginner cycle of tango lessons at Port Warwick. Beginner lessons will be held on Tuesday evenings starting on April 2, 2013. This session is open to new participants and all those who would like to work again on the basics. Intermediate lessons will continue, followed by a Tango dance party on Fridays. Colloquium and Public Lecture: On the Unreasonable Effectiveness of Hydrodynamics in Heavy Ion Collisions at Ultrarelativisitic Energies
Raju Venugopalan heads the Nuclear Theory group at Brookhaven National Lab and is an adjunct professor at Stony Brook University. He will describe how bulk phenomena in heavy ion collisions are described by the relativistic viscous hydrodynamics of a nearly perfect fluid. The role of scattering, plasma instabilities and the possible existence of a turbulent attractor in the strongly interacting Quark-Gluon plasma will be addressed. The colloquium is offered in the CEBAF Center auditorium at 11 a.m. on April 3.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Critter Time of Year
As spring approaches, many insects and other creatures are moving out of their winter homes or are becoming more active. And with so many boxes and other shutdown items stored in different places and without much activity for months on end, small creatures could have moved into them. Now that workers are moving or opening the boxes again, this activity may lead to human-critter encounters.

To prevent any surprise encounters in your area, look for signs of critters on or around boxes, disused items or seldom-accessed shelving, racks or quiet storage areas before you access these spaces. Critter clues can be chewed papers, holes that are not normally associated with that type of box or even webs or droppings. Clues like these were recently seen in a Safety Warden walk-through, where the team noted in one small building a whole colony of black widow spiders along the door frame. One of the boxes of stored items in that same building had a collection of mouse droppings, indicating mice lived in the area.

If you encounter creatures and need to have them controlled, call Facilities Maintenance at x7400 or submit a Facilities Work Request detailing the exact location and what type of animal or insect (or their indicators) was observed. JLab has standing contracts with the animal/insect control companies who frequently are on site; the contractors are properly credentialed and have experience in addressing these issues. It is not your job to wrangle snakes or eliminate nests of stinging insects.
