Research Assistantship Deadline Nears
JLab is seeking candidates for a research assistantship. The program will sponsor a minority undergraduate student to work on projects that are part of the lab’s research program or directly related to the scientific or engineering aspects of the research program. This assistantship is funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund and will provide funds to support the student at the university during the 2013-2014 academic year. Nominations must be submitted by a faculty sponsor before the student may apply. Deadline for applications is April 5. Faculty sponsors may obtain more information and submit their nomination online.

Free-Electron Laser

The FEL team made good progress in testing the puck transfer mechanism for the new FEL gun. The puck engagement prototype was assembled in Lab 3A. Testing under vacuum included the internal components for grabbing the puck via a pin mechanism,  the manipulator, and the step motor for the linear translation stage that moves the puck cradle up and down. The puck was successfully seated into the retainer ring, simulating in this way the nominal operation position inside the ball electrode of the electron gun. Further functionality tests will be performed next week, including tests of the reproducibility of successfully seating the puck into the retainer ring.

Engineering

The Machine Shop is presently manufacturing or continuing to manufacture:

• Hall-B’s CLAS 12 High Threshold Cerenkov Counter (HTCC) Mirror assembly jig sections. There are 12 of these sections, which are made out of Last A Foam. These parts are the bases for mounting the mirror sections.
• XT Magnet core extension shims.
• Three ZA vacuum chambers. These are new septum magnets for a spreader and two recombiners.
• An assortment of upstream and downstream support mounting brackets.

The shop has processed 127 job requests since Feb. 12.

Medical Procedure Documentation & Dosimeter Usage Reminder
Just a reminder from the Radcon Office: If you are a radiation worker/have a current OSL dosimeter and you will be undergoing a medical procedure where you will be injected with a radionuclide, you are encouraged to notify Radiation Control, Becky Mosbrucker, x7236. You should avoid wearing your dosimeter until RadCon clears you for dosimeter use. When you report to RadCon after such a procedure, they will request information about the type of material you were administered, and staff may ask to directly monitor you as a followup for a few days. The purpose of this additional monitoring is to ensure that your JLab occupational exposure record is accurate. The monitoring also helps RadCon assess potential exposure to nearby stored dosimeters or coworkers.

Also, make sure to only wear your dosimeter while at work. Never take your dosimeter home or offsite. Remember your proper dosimetry storage location (badge rack) for your dosimeter. When you pick up the dosimeter, always read the label to ensure your name is the one on the label, as the location of your dosimeter in the rack can change. If you find any discrepancies in your rack location or would like to move your dosimeter to a different storage location, please notify Becky Mosbrucker, x7236.

Zimbra Calendar and Email Upgrade
On the evening of April 16, the Zimbra email and calendar system will be upgraded. The entire system will be down 5:30-9 p.m. for the upgrade. Email and calendar access will be back up no later than 9 p.m. Email delivered during the upgrade will be stored on the mail servers and will be delivered once Zimbra is back online. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Update Contact Information to Receive Automated Lab Status Messages
JLab uses an automated phone message system to call lab staff members and users in advance of a delayed opening or closure due to unplanned events, such as severe weather. Staffers may update their personal contact information to indicate whether they would prefer receiving these calls on their home, mobile or other phone numbers; See the posted memo on how to update your information. Users may also update their local contact information by following these instructions to ensure they receive lab status information.

JLab Records and Information Management Fact of the Week
Records Management is everyone's responsibility! Each employee at JLab uses records as part of his or her job. Regardless of media, each employee should be aware of the records handled and the disposition rules of those records. Some records have a very short lifetime and may be disposed shortly after created or received. Some records, such as those pertaining to the radiation contamination program or accelerator facilities, have a lifetime that may exceed 75 years. To view the records schedules that govern JLab's records, visit the "DOE Records Schedules" collection in Docushare or contact Kim Kindrew.

JLab Tornado Warning Siren Test Friday at 10:30 a.m.
JLab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 5. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. Individuals planning to be in the Central Materials Storage Area (where the siren is located) while the test is taking place must have with them and wear two layers of hearing protection. A sign posted at the CMSA gate states this requirement.
