Advance Registration Open for Users Group Annual Meeting
May 17 is the deadline for completing advance registration for the Jefferson Lab Users Group Annual Meeting. To see the program, register and find additional information, visit the meeting webpages. Graduate students who attend can take advantage of many incentives, including free registration, free lunches with speakers, and the poster competition (abstracts are due May 17). Also note that in addition to the customary reception on the evening of the first day, there will be a party in the new "user space area" in the ARC library after the conclusion of the meeting on Friday, May 31.

Free-Electron Laser

Many of the procurements for the injector beamline are in progress, and the Innovative Naval Prototype undulator contract has been finalized.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A two-dimensional coupled-channel scattering lattice model is presented in this latest paper, which describes a two-coupled-channel scalar resonant scattering system. The Monte Carlo simulation is performed on finite lattices and in various moving frames, and the method of extracting the scattering amplitudes from the discrete finite-volume spectrum is discussed. The model sheds light on future coupled-channel hadron-hadron scattering lattice QCD calculations, which will be important for understanding the phenomenology of light hadron spectroscopy from the Jefferson Lab experimental program at 12 GeV.

Engineering

The Metrology (Alignment group) reports the following activities:

• Completion of the final alignment for all the east arc magnets;
• Completion of the initial alignment for the east recombiner;
• Assisting the injector group with the post-run PEPPo experiment;
• Initial alignment of Line D (5C section);
• The alignment of all magnets installed in the east spreader, west spreader, west recombiner and transport channel recombiner;
• Monument update measurements were made in Hall C;
• Final alignment of the west arc magnets has begun;
• Initial alignment made in 2L26 of C100-8 cryomodule and in 1L25 of C100-9;
• Hall D Tagger magnet vacuum chamber is now in place;
• Hall A target can/Moller target have been documented as-found; and
• Initial alignments of the pair spectrometer, collimators and sweeper magnets have been completed in Hall D.

Heat Stress Season Is Coming
Unless this is your first year in the Hampton Roads area, you know that heat and humidity are on the way. Heat stress presents a significant health hazard, and in 2012 across the U.S., there were more than 13,600 cases of heat stress requiring medical intervention and 177 deaths. Heat stress was the number one weather-related killer.

Several intersecting factors determine how you will be affected by the heat, including age, weight, level of fitness, medications, diet, alcohol, dehydration and acclimatization (body's internal adjustment to heat). Acclimatization requires about 10 to 14 days in similar heat/humidity conditions. Environmental factors are temperature, humidity, direct sunlight, reflected heat, work load, nearby heat-producing equipment, clothing and PPE.

Jefferson Lab addresses heat stress in ES&H Manual 6670 Appendix T1. Also, the Jefferson Lab weather station, available via a link on the Facilities Management Home Page, continuously displays the Heat Stress Index. Additionally, the weather station triggers pager alerts regarding different heat stress conditions.

For supervisors and SOTRs, never dismiss complaints from an employee/worker who reports not feeling well due to heat and wants to rest in a cooler area. If you observe a worker who seems "out of it," take action to protect him or her. In either case, get the person to Occupational Medicine as soon as possible.

Radiation Worker Class Offered on May 14
A full-day Radiation Worker I class will be offered at Jefferson Lab on Tuesday, May 14, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A few slots are still available for this class. Anyone interested in taking this training may sign up by contacting Maya Keller, Radiation Control Dept., x6021. If you'd like to take this training, sign up before 5 p.m. Friday.

Student Mentor Informational Meeting Set for May 22
Memorial Day marks the beginning of the “summer student season.” Just as we prepare for other seasons (hurricane, winter, etc.), all staff that work with high school or undergraduate students are invited to a one-hour session to review and discuss a few requirements and guidelines for the lab's mentors and sponsors that will ensure the students’ safety and success over the next few months. Mont will provide his perspectives on students, mentoring and student safety. In addition, there will be brief presentations by Bob May, Rhonda Barbosa and Steve Gagnon on student safety and mentoring best practices. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 22, at 10 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. For more information, contact Telesha Brown, x7567.

TIAA-CREF Onsite Individual Counseling Sessions
TIAA-CREF will be offering Individual Counseling Sessions, where you can discuss your personal financial situation with a TIAA-CREF consultant on a confidential basis. They will be available to discuss how to help you achieve your financial goals by investing in financial solutions such as mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance and annuities. The sessions will be offered Thursday and Friday, June 6-7, in Support Service Center room 21. To schedule an appointment, call TIAA-CREF at (800) 732-8353, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

Ready, Set, Register for the JAG Run-A-Round
Registration is open for the 28th Annual Run-A-Round, sponsored by JAG. Jefferson Lab staff, users, students, full-time contractors and immediate family members are invited to participate in the event, which will be held Wednesday, May 22, 3-6 p.m. Staff and users who participate in the run or volunteer can receive a free 2013 Jefferson Lab T-shirt. Volunteers make this event possible, so sign up to volunteer today. Race participants must register online by May 21 to be eligible for awards.
