12 GeV Upgrade

Acceptance testing of the tenth and final C100 cryomodule in the Cryomodule Test Facility has been completed. In-tunnel checkout of C100-3 has been completed and checkout of C100-7 has begun. A major event for the new 4 Kelvin helium plant was recently achieved by producing 4500 liters/hour of liquefaction; this was a contract deliverable performance criterion for the vendor. Testing into shorts has been completed on zone 23 in the North Linac, and testing has begun on zone 25. The installation/re-assembly of the east spreader is lacking only the YB septa magnet, the drift tubes, and some low-conductivity water tubing. The pedestals for the 4-meter dipole magnets in the beamline to Hall D have been installed. Forty of the new 10A trim supplies have been received and another 20 are in transit from the vendor. The new box supply for the arc 1 dipole magnet string is being tested at the vendor’s facility. Plating of the new radiofrequency separator cavities has been completed. All 12 GeV project work for the control system hardware has been completed.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

As lattice QCD calculations steadily approach percent-level precision for the masses and weak decays of stable hadrons, many researchers are exploring progressively more challenging and correspondingly more interesting QCD computations. In recent work, a new method has been developed for calculating the continuous momentum dependence of the QCD vacuum-polarization function. This is related to the measured energy dependence of the production of hadrons in electron-positron collisions and to the QCD corrections to precision Standard Model observables, such as the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Safety and Proper Transaction (Ordering) Codes
Many at Jefferson Lab don't know that using the proper transaction code when ordering materials often triggers action by other groups. Chemicals, for example, need to be properly reviewed for health hazards before they are ordered. This helps prevent an inadvertent ordering of chemicals not wanted on Jefferson Lab property, such as agents that can cause birth defects. As you prepare to purchase a chemical, review the list of restricted items in ES&H Manual Chapter 3410 Appendix T1 for major categories of prohibited chemicals and agents. As always, Industrial Hygiene can assist in the chemical selection process before an order is placed.

Also, the use of the proper code helps in screening for radioactive materials, lasers or other hazards that the professionals in those fields need to either track or add to inventories or licenses, or even notify government agencies. There are quantity limits for various materials Jefferson Lab is allow to have on site due to permits. By not using the correct code, Jefferson Lab may inadvertently exceed those limits, which could have significant adverse consequences.

Be sure to mark the ordering code correctly and not try to sneak something "under the radar" - as improper possession at Jefferson Lab could have far wider impact than you may be aware.

Sequestration Q&A Posted on Insight
You can now find a document with information about the implementation of a reduced pay/work week schedule for Jefferson Lab due to sequestration in the Announcements column of the Insight page.

Monthly Tornado Siren Test Set for Friday
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 7. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren may be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise.

Summer Rental Car Discounts For Jefferson Lab Employees
Enterprise Rent-A-Car and National Car Rental offer Jefferson Lab employees discounted rates for personal use. Contact Veronica, x7269, at CI Travel for details. Mention reference number NA21008, so the discounted rate will be reflected in the reservation she makes for your summer rental.

Tracking Thomas at JLab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the JLab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Dick Owen correctly guessed the location for May 29. Check out Tracking Thomas on flickr for a better view of his last location and this week's new mystery photo.

JLab Weekly Briefs is an ongoing publication providing information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, free-electron laser, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: Public Affairs or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
