12 GeV Upgrade

The Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) team has been identified and chartered. The ARR team will include both internal and external reviewers. The ARR process evaluates the readiness of the people, procedures and equipment to safely carry out the commissioning and routine operation of the accelerator. The ARR for the 12 GeV upgrade will be a phased process, starting with the commissioning of the accelerator as we usher in the 12 GeV era. The first review module is tentatively scheduled for August 2013.

Engineering

Electrical Engineering Systems has been engaged with accelerator recovery and installation on many fronts over the last six weeks.

The EESRF (Radiofrequency or RF) group has been supporting C100 cryomodule commissioning and the recovery of original C25 and C50 cryomodules. This work involves restoring the operation of high-power and low-level RF electronics following a year-long shutdown. Since April, four new 12 GeV RF systems have been commissioned or are nearing the completion of initial RF turn on and check out. Only two remain to finish out the RF construction work. The two are waiting for reworked waveguide circulators to be delivered. The circulator vendor visited Jefferson Lab for a week to evaluate an improved tuning process that cannot be done at his home facility. On the procurement front, the bid package for new RF separator solid state amplifiers has been released, and the first delivery of klystrons for the injector RF upgrade has been received.

The EESDC (DC Power Systems) group has installed several miles of new cable, reconnected about 500 magnets and begun performing quality assurance checks on the completed work. The first 40 of the 275 new 20 Amp trim power supplies are being checked as they are delivered and then installed into the accelerator. Work continues on refurbishing shunt chassis and 10 Amp trim cards. Cable terminations and AC power connections for the new trim racks are in progress, as well.

As magnets and beamline components are installed, the EESIC (Instrumentation and Controls) group is turning on and checking out vacuum monitoring and controls hardware. System testing of the new stripline beam position monitor production circuit boards is in progress. A quotation request for the assembly of the full production units is now in procurement. The new stripline BPM cans have been delivered and installed on girders.

The EESSS (Systems Support) group has been involved in many areas of the work listed above. Electricians are hooking up trim racks, pulling cable for the Hall D Tagger area for Personnel Safety System hardware, preparing for beam switchyard cable and panel box installation, and configuring plug strips for EESIC racks. The Fabrication Shop has been building boards for 12 GeV YA magnet power supply controls, a temperature readback chassis for tunnel environmental monitoring, assembling wiring harnesses for quad magnet girders, and building an intermediate frequency (IF) receiver board for BPM's.

Facilities Management and Logistics

Desk Delivery of Office Products
The office supply business, Forms & Supply Inc., will begin desktop deliveries of office supplies at Jefferson Lab next week. Those who placed orders will be asked to sign for deliveries, and the signed packing slips will be provided to Jefferson Lab Shipping & Receiving, Bldg. 90, Room 103. Undelivered items will be taken to Shipping & Receiving for future delivery. It is anticipated this new process will speed up delivery of office supplies by one business day. Keeping Young Visitors Safe At Home
With summer vacations starting, many of us may have visitors who have small children. If you don't have small children at home, you may not have "child proofed" your house. Small children often prefer to explore their new surroundings on their own while adults socialize and can quickly get into many things both inside and outside. Below are some quick tips for keeping your smallest visitors safe.

Inside: Did you remove the medicines off the counters, sinks or bedside tables? How about the cleaning products under the kitchen or bathroom sink? Do you know if your house plants are poisonous?

Outside: Lawn and garden pesticides and weed-killers, lighter fluid for the grill and similar products should be secured. How is gasoline for your lawn equipment stored - can they open up the container? Are tools, especially sharp-edged utensils, secured so they don't fall or can be used by children?

If you look around your house, garage and yard, you may see many hazards not listed above. Remember that inquisitive children can get into the darnedest places - take a few moments now to protect them.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

JLab Computer Systems Maintenance Period, Tuesday, June 18, 5-7 p.m.
The CNI group is planning a computer systems maintenance period for Tuesday, June 18, 5-7 p.m. During this time, the cc.jlab.org web server will be offline while it is upgraded, and most other web servers will be offline intermittently for system patch installation. The Zimbra email system may have a short down (less than five minutes) in order to install an updated license file. Finally, Windows and Linux patches will be pushed out to all desktop systems. Plan now to reboot your system on the following Wednesday or Thursday in order to finalize patch installation.

Personal Dosimeter Change Out Set for Monday, July 8
Jefferson Lab's semi-annual personal dosimeter change out will take place during the afternoon of Monday, July 8. Be sure to put your dosimeter in its place in the personal dosimeter racks no later than 1 p.m. on July 8. This includes the dosimeters of all staff, students, users and subcontractors. If you need to use your dosimeter during the change out period on July 8, you may exchange it that morning in the Radiation Control Dosimetry Office in Trailer 52B, Room 4, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. If you are leaving for an extended Independence Day holiday break, be sure to put your dosimeter in its rack before departing. Last 12 GeV Upgrade Cryomodule Moved to Tunnel
