Physics

In Hall C, the Q-weak collaboration has submitted a paper for publication: "First Determination of the Weak Charge of the Proton." The article is based on 4 percent of the data accumulated during the Q-weak run.

Free-Electron Laser

Michelle Shinn gave two public talks at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, WV, to a large audience. Members of the FEL team provided expertise for a successful test of a superconducting radiofrequency gun at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which is partially funded by the Office of Naval Research. The sample titanium ring that the segmented insulator vendor sent for quality assurance testing has been surface characterized. The FEL team will have a conference call with the vendor and Jefferson Lab procurement early next week to find the most suitable way to improve the surface finish of the rings. System engineering and simulation continues for the buncher cavity, which was purchased with money from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The final design review for the U24 undulator being purchased for Los Alamos National Lab was held this week, with attendees from STI Optronics and LANL.

Work Control Documents Update
The Long Shutdown changed many of the practices and activities many Jefferson Lab workers had followed for years. Now that some shutdown work is starting to wind down, it is time to revisit the associated Work Control Documents. ES&H Manual Chapter 3000 Planning for Safe Operations has valuable information concerning Work Control Documents.

If you are the owner of such documents, now may be a good time to review whether these documents need updating. These documents may need updating if they have expired or been made obsolete due to the elimination or addition of equipment during the shutdown. Alternatively, a document could have already been reviewed during shutdown activities and has been determined to still be valid as written, but needs to be validated. Take a few minutes now to make sure your Work Control Documents are in the latest format, signed and ready to go, and workers who are using the documents are educated about any updates, changes or additions.

Windows XP End of Support Coming Soon
On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP. After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide security patches for any XP system, rendering these systems vulnerable to hackers and other security issues. When security patches are no longer available for these systems, they will be removed from the Jefferson Lab network. The CNI group will assist with migrating Windows XP systems to Windows 7. If you have a Windows XP system, visit this webpage and answer a few questions to determine the viability of updating your system and to see what you need to do to prepare for the update. If your XP system can be updated, and you would like to do so, contact the IT Division Helpdesk to schedule a time to migrate your system well before next April. Doing this now will ensure that your system is updated in a timely manner.

Summer Interns Poster Session Set for Aug. 2
Mark your calendar for the 2013 Summer Interns Poster Session. More than 30 high school and undergraduate interns who spent the summer doing research and working on projects at Jefferson Lab will show off the results of their work. The students are eager to explain and discuss their work, and questions by members of the lab community are encouraged. The session is set for Friday, Aug. 2, in the CEBAF Center lobby, 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m.

Department of Energy Food Drive Ends July 31
The Thomas Jefferson Site Office (TJSO) is collecting donations from its federal employees for the annual  “Feds Feed Families” food drive to benefit the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. There is no expectation of Jefferson Lab employee participation in this program, although anyone wishing to contribute may do so. Marked donation boxes for non-perishable food items will be located in the CEBAF Center lobby through July 31. For more information, contact Steve Neilson, x7215.

Extra Hands Needed For Tunnel Housekeeping in Early September
Accelerator Operations is starting to prepare for the end of the Long Shutdown and is getting ready for CEBAF accelerator commissioning activities. Before these activities can get underway, general housekeeping will take place in the tunnel, which include dusting components and sweeping the tunnel floor. It's a big job, and volunteers will be needed to help with this work. The housekeeping effort will likely get underway in early September. An announcement with specific dates and details will go out in advance.

Tracking Thomas at Jefferson Lab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the Jefferson Lab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Harry Fanning correctly guessed the location for July 17. Honorable mentions go to Sam Holben, Robert Martin and Scott Thompson. Check out Tracking Thomas on flickr for a better view of his last location and this week's new mystery photo.

JLab Weekly Briefs is an ongoing publication providing information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, free-electron laser, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: Public Affairs or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
