12 GeV Upgrade
The Office of Science Energy Systems Acquisition Advisory Board (ESAAB) met on Sept. 4 to review the Baseline Change Proposal for the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade Project. The ESAAB representatives recommended approval, and the formal approval document was signed by the Acquisition Executive. This action established a new baseline for the project with a completion date of September 2017.
Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics
A first principle calculation of the deuteron and its properties would be a theoretical milestone on the path toward calculating quantities of importance in low-energy nuclear physics from quantum chromodynamics (QCD). New work presents the necessary formalism and methodology to determine two-nucleon scattering parameters from lattice QCD. In particular, it demonstrates that the central and tensor nuclear forces present in the 3S1-3D1 two-nucleon channel, as well as the deuteron binding energy, can be reliably extracted from such calculations.
Engineering
The Metrology group (alignment/magnet measurement) continues to support the installation of components for the 12 GeV machine. Over the last week or so, the group has:

Aligned the final pedestals in the AT transport line after it was altered;

Conducted an initial alignment in the beam switchyard (bsy) and in line D;

Made a final alignment in the southwest spreader (S2);

Conducted fiducialization and alignment of the last C-50 cryomodule, which is installed in slot SL10;

Made a Hall B Electromagnetic Calorimeter survey; and
-
Completed the Hall C Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) bogie alignment.
Additionally, the Machine Shop reports that work on modifications to the 750 MHz Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) crab cavity, as well as on Hall B's CLAS 12 High Threshold Cerenkov Counter (HTCC) mold mirrors foam substrate facet blocks 1L and 1R; these are being cut to size on the shop's five-axis machine. The shop has processed 147 job requests since Aug. 5.

Electrical Safety Considerations
Among the more than 1 million trained and qualified electricians, more than 96 percent have experienced electric injuries or shocks. Several factors determine the extent of a worker's injury due to contact with electricity. Theses factors include the amount of electricity (amperage), the body's resistance to and the path through the body of the current, if it is alternating or direct current and how long one remains in contact.
Jefferson Lab has many types of equipment that use electricity, from low-voltage signal systems to the CEBAF accelerator, which requires its own substation. These electrical systems are well designed, installed and tested before the average person "operates" the system. When things go wrong, it is generally when either an untrained or inadequately trained person tries to manipulate electricity that is not in their scope of training or abilities. Those who have been trained, such as qualified electricians, technicians and engineers, know their limitations. If you do not know if you are a trained electrician/technician, you are not; therefore, you must not attempt to do any type of electrical work. If some system needs electrical work, request that support through the Work Request system or the appropriate means for your equipment.

United Way Campaign Kicks Off Oct. 2
The United Way annual fundraising campaign at Jefferson Lab will kick off on Wednesday, Oct. 2, with the lab’s United Way Picnic and Raffle. The lab's goal for this month-long appeal is 100 percent participation by staff. A pledge or donation through the United Way is a great way to give back to our community, to help make our community a better place and to say "thank you" for the support this region has given to the lab over the years. You can download a United Way pledge form online, and hard copies will be available beginning on Oct. 1 at the reception desks at the Support Service Center and CEBAF Center. They may also be picked up at the United Way Raffle ticket sales table in the CEBAF Center lobby daily during lunch time starting on Oct. 2. Send or deliver completed forms to Joshua Cameron in CEBAF Center, Room B214, Mail Stop 12-B, by Friday, Nov. 1. Questions may be directed to Joshua Cameron, x7628.
Come Hungry to the United Way Picnic on Oct. 2
Jefferson Lab's United Way campaign will get underway with the traditional United Way Picnic and Raffle, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 2 in CEBAF Center. All members of the lab community are invited to participate. All picnic food and beverage items will be $1 each; the menu includes hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, assorted chips, assorted canned soda and bottled water. Additional food and beverage items will be available for purchase in the cafeteria. Raffle ticket sales for three iPad minis will begin at that time and will run through the end of lunch time on Oct. 29. Tickets will be available for $1 each and may be purchased at the table in the CEBAF Center lobby, from 12–1 p.m. on workdays. The winning ticket for each iPad mini will be drawn during the Jefferson Lab Activities Group Tailgate picnic scheduled for Oct. 29. Winners need not be present to win and will have until 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, to claim their prize. One iPad win per person. Online Auction Site Lets You Bid on Excessed JLab Property
The Jefferson Lab Property section wants to let the lab community and the public know about the online auction service it is using to sell excess lab property. Surplus property items are posted online. Anyone can bid on the items, once they have registered on the site. The only exception is that the person who excessed a specific property item cannot bid on that item.
2013 Fall Golf Outing Registration Due Oct. 11
The Jefferson Lab 2013 Fall Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Green Course) in Williamsburg, Va. The tourney will kick off at noon with a shotgun start. The format will be a handicapped Captain's Choice. Each team of four must include at least two Jefferson Lab employees. The cost for lab employees (you qualify if you receive a paycheck from JSA - Jefferson Science Associates, LLC) is $60. The cost for non-lab employees is $75. The fee includes range balls, green fees, cart, food after the tournament and the prize fund. More information and directions to the course are available on the JAG webpage. TEDF Dedication Ceremony R.S.V.P. Due
Jefferson Lab will conduct a dedication ceremony of the new Technology & Engineering Development Facility (TEDF) on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. The lab community is invited to attend the event. The program will include short remarks by lab leadership, the Department of Energy and invited officials.
