12 GeV Upgrade

The several parts for the Super High Momentum Spectrometer support carriage have been welded together into the final structure in Hall C. This has been followed by the start of construction of the concrete shield house on the carriage. The upgrade to the cryogenics infrastructure to accommodate the new spectrometer has begun. Welding of the helium vessel is underway for the Horizontal Bend (HB) dipole magnet, with one coil now “captive.” Manufacturing of parts for the nitrogen shield and support links for the HB is continuing, and parts for the vacuum vessel are ready. For the Q1 quadrupole magnet, the yoke quadrants and four coil assemblies have all been test-fit and some small adjustments have been made. Assembly is underway to form the cold mass for Q1, which will subsequently be inserted into the helium vessel, which will then be welded closed. The thermal shield is being fabricated, and the outer vacuum cryostat is ready. For the dipole magnet, the prototype winding is nearing completion, after which an epoxy-bonding test will be made. Very similar tooling and techniques will later be used to fabricate the Q2 and Q3 quadrupole magnets starting in the spring.

Engineering

All Electrical Engineering Systems (EES) groups are actively working on Hot Checkout activities in preparation for beam startup in November. Thousands of devices need to be checked and verified as ready for beam operation. The Instrument and Controls (I&C) group is responsible for beam position monitors, vacuum system pumps and valve controls, harps, viewers and other diagnostics. The Radiofrequency group has been checking the “warm RF” components in the injector region and is upgrading the RF system for the R100 cryomodule in the injector. Magnet group personnel have been performing polarity, continuity and high-potential checks on tunnel magnets. The Safety System group has supported certifications of equipment being brought back online and is performing functional checks of all their equipment. The injector region is nearly ready for beam, and a significant portion of the Run1 hardware (one-pass beam through the accelerator) has been checked. Much remains to be done, but a good start has been made, demonstrating for this week’s Accelerator Readiness Review that the lab is on track to successfully meet its goals.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Distractions and Looming Deadlines
Jefferson Lab workers have been under subtle stress the past few weeks, with the budget events, looming Accelerator Readiness Review, finishing the accelerator checkout deadlines, and equipment issues. While management continues to stress that no job is so important not to do it safely, workers may put themselves in bad situations by trying to do their job and meet expectations that they impose on themselves. It is in the nature of Jefferson Lab workers to try to excel in whatever they do.

However, this drive to meet schedules or our desire to do well can allow a "hurry up" or "take a shortcut" approach to creep into our work. We generally know the outcome from this approach - either an injury or accident that causes equipment or facility damage that will take a long time to fix. There is an old safety adage: There is never enough time to do it right, but there is a lot of time to fix it. Spend a few extra minutes, or however long it takes, to always do it right the first time. This will put us all ahead in the end.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Windows Software Updates
The CNI group is planning to release updated versions of Java, Firefox and Thunderbird on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 23. Plan to reboot your Computer Center-managed Windows desktop on Thursday or Friday to finalize software installation. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Copying and Printing Conservation of Resources
Everyone at Jefferson Lab is asked to continue to conserve resources and to consider printing or copying only what is essential for your work. If you feel that you do need to print something, consider saving resources with the following tips:
- Be sure to use duplex (two-sided printing, set as default);
- Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper (available in the layout section of your print dialog);
- Make only black & white (B&W) prints/copies (set as default for printing); and
- Consider scan-to-email documents as PDFs instead of making paper copies.

Red Cross Blood Drive Set for Oct. 30
The next American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in CEBAF Center, Room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend. Baggage Check Fees Added by United Airlines
Star Alliance (United Airlines) Gold and Silver status customers announcement: Effective with tickets issued on or after Oct. 17, United Airlines is adjusting the number of free checked bags allowed. If you fly United and need to pay for checked baggage that was previously free, Jefferson Lab will reimburse the cost of one bag on domestic flights and two bags on international flights. The cost can be added to the miscellaneous column on the expense report. "Baggage Checking Highlights" can be found on the Jefferson Lab Travel Department home page.

JAG Tailgate Set for Tues., Oct. 29
Jefferson Lab employees and users are invited to the Jefferson Activities Group's Tailgate, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29, 3-5:30 p.m., in the field behind the SURA Residence Facility. The Tailgate will feature chili, nachos, grilled foods and beverages, and games for all ages. You are encouraged to wear your favorite team's colors (whatever the sport) and sturdy shoes, and dress for potentially cool afternoon/evening temperatures. Planned activities include a pickup soccer game and cornhole tournament (advance registration required).
