Newport News, Va. – A project team at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility – or Jefferson Lab – recently received a DOE Secretary’s Achievement Award for creating a new building complex that will advance the lab’s unique capabilities in superconducting accelerator, particle detector and cryogenics technologies.
With this award, the Energy Department recognized the outstanding efforts of the team that planned and managed the construction of Jefferson Lab’s Technology and Engineering Development Facility (TEDF).
The TEDF complex provides Jefferson Lab staff, visiting scientists and students with state-of-the-art facilities for research in nuclear physics, accelerator science, applied nuclear science and technology and advanced instrumentation.
Construction began on the $73.2 million project in 2010 and it was dedicated in October 2013. The facility includes a new 74,600-square-foot building for technology and engineering development, a modernized 96,000-square-foot Test Lab and a 46,550-square-foot addition to the Test Lab.
“This project was very complex,” noted Rusty Sprouse, TEDF project director, “possibly the most complicated of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Science Laboratory Infrastructure projects. We weren’t just building a new facility, we were also renovating an existing facility and building an addition to it, all while continuing to use portions of the existing facility for time-critical, mission-essential work for the lab’s 12 GeV Upgrade project.”
The TEDF project was recognized by the DOE for its transformational effects, which enhance and modernize critical work areas and position Jefferson Lab for future work and research opportunities.
Sprouse joined DOE’s Thomas Jefferson Site Office Federal Project Director Rick Korynta and TEDF Project Manager Rebecca Yasky at an event earlier this year where the DOE’s Deputy Undersecretary for Management and Performance David Klaus presented them with the team’s award.
The project had earned awards for its design excellence and safety record from the Engineering News-Record and from the American Institute of Architects/Philadelphia Chapter for design excellence. The U.S. Green Building Council awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Ratings to the Technology and Engineering Development building in December 2012 and to the renovated Test Lab building in January 2014.
