12 GeV Upgrade

Work is continuing on the support structure for the Hall C Super High Momentum Spectrometer. (Please be aware that the adjacent areas are congested due to the construction activities in progress.) The upgraded CEBAF accelerator has started commissioning activities and this will continue for much of the spring. Phase 2 of the Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) is scheduled for the end of January. This phase of the ARR will evaluate the preparedness to deliver multi-pass, tuned beam to the Hall D Tagger Vault as well as commissioning and operating Hall A with continuous-wave, multi-pass beam.

JSA Postdoctoral Prize
The JSA Postdoctoral Prize will fund a research project of the winner's choosing with a grant. The award is based (in part) on the originality and quality of this proposed research. If you want to be considered, email your application package to Lorelei Chopard by Jan. 21, 5 p.m. For further information on the prize and the application process, visit the Jefferson Lab Users Group wiki.

2013 JSA Thesis Prize
The deadline for nominations for the 2013 JSA Thesis Prize is Feb. 3. A complete package requires a nomination letter by a senior scientist, the names of three people who will send letters of recommendation, and a copy of the thesis. Ph.D. theses completed during calendar year 2013 are eligible, as well as theses completed during the last quarter of 2012 (if they haven't been submitted before). Send all materials by email to Lorelei Chopard. For further information on the prize, visit the Jefferson Lab Users Group wiki.

Woman Physicist of the Month
The American Physical Society's Committee on the Status of Women in Physics (CSWP) highlights exceptional female physicists through the CSWP Woman Physicist of the Month award. The award recognizes "female physicists who have positively impacted other individuals’ lives and careers." For more information on submitting a nomination, see the APS website.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A new Theory Center paper presents a one-to-one mapping between the finite volume spectrum of a two-particle system and its corresponding infinite volume scattering amplitude. The result holds for two-particle systems with an arbitrary number of open coupled channels, spin and masses, and it agrees with previous approximations made in the literature. Although the result is universal, the implication of the formalism for studies of multichannel baryon-baryon systems via lattice QCD is discussed.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Training to Save a Life
Consider a fact from a recent National Safety Council bulletin: 13 percent of workplace deaths are from sudden cardiac arrest. Jefferson Lab has installed AED devices at critical locations across the site. Each month, the lab offers one or two classes on Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation/Automatic External Defibrillation (CPR/AED), which provides proper training for use of the AED devices located at Jefferson Lab. If you want to learn CPR/AED, you can register for the course, SAF 105 CPR/AED Use, through the Learning Management System.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

CNI Maintenance Period Tuesday, Jan. 21, 5-10 p.m.
The IT Division's CNI group will hold a systems and network maintenance period on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 5-10 p.m. During this time, work will be performed on the Zimbra email system, which may cause some interruptions to service as the proxy servers are upgraded. Updated certificates will be installed on several web servers, so there may be a few brief outages while these certificates are installed. The solaris system, jlabs3, will be taken out of service, and there will be network maintenance, which may cause a brief outage to some systems. Adobe packages (Flash, reader, etc.), Java and Thunderbird updates will be released to all Windows systems. Lastly, security patches will be released to all Windows and Linux systems. Plan now to reboot your system on the Thursday or Friday following CNI Maintenance. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about computer-related issues, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

JAG Dog Club Rings in New Year with Pet Photography Tips
How do you take a picture of your dog that looks great and captures him at his best? To kick off the 2014 Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dog class, the JAG Dog Training Club will be offering a lunchtime pet photography talk on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at noon. Bring a bag lunch to the Science Education classrooms, Support Service Center Rooms 72 A and B, to hear Alan Gavalya's tips for capturing your dog's personality in a photo. After the talk, there will be a presentation on the upcoming dog training class. The new class will meet on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the SSC lobby, starting on Feb. 4. No dogs are welcome at this initial lunch time meeting, but come, sit and stay with the JAG Dog Club members! For more information, contact Joyce Miller, x7163, or Brian Kross, x7022.

Tracking Thomas at Jefferson Lab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the Jefferson Lab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Becky Mosbrucker correctly guessed the location for Jan. 8. Check out Tracking Thomas on flickr for a better view of his last location and this week's new mystery photo.

JLab Weekly Briefs is an ongoing publication providing information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, free-electron laser, reviews, upcoming activities and special events.
