Apply Now for the JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program
JSA will award fellowships to qualified doctoral students at SURA member universities for research related to the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Va. Each fellowship will provide the awardee's home institution with a $10,000 stipend (~half of a normal academic year research assistant stipend). Application materials are due by March 5. Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

The dark photon, a weakly coupled light gauge boson motivated by astrophysical puzzles and as a solution to the muon "g-2" discrepancy, is the focus of future direct search experiments at Jefferson Lab. As the allowed dark photon mass, coupling and decay modes become more constrained by ongoing experiments, some predictions of that scenario are sharpened. A new paper shows that the new gauge boson can cause a shift in the weak mixing angle at the low Q² by amounts potentially observable in the Q-weak experiment (currently under analysis) or future high-precision polarized Moller scattering measurements.

Loss of Control of Radioactive Material
During the last eight months of the Long Shutdown, Jefferson Lab experienced eight separate events where property identified as Radioactive Material (RAM) was either misplaced or moved to an unauthorized (un-posted) area. It is imperative that Jefferson Lab workers be more diligent in recognizing, handling and storing RAM, especially items that have been surveyed by the Radiation Control Department or staged for a RadCon survey. All eight events involved administrative controls ("people actions"), and none involved engineering controls.

Over the course of the shutdown, the inventory of items that are logged, tracked and stored as RAM increased significantly. These materials are easy to recognize by their bright yellow and magenta tags reading "Caution Radioactive Material." These tags are not to be removed except by RadCon personnel. In addition, workers must always notify RadCon to disassemble or relocate such items.

Materials that have been checked and cleared as non-radioactive, but are still located in the beam enclosure or are too large to be removed by RadCon, will have a white tag and wording indicating that the item is okay to move. Radioactive material tags and postings are an administrative control that helps prevent the loss or mishandling of RAM. Administrative controls are an essential element of safety and must not be neglected or subordinated to urgent work.

RadCon is working with Division Safety Officers and others to improve awareness in work areas with RAM storage. RadCon has also put together a short informational video to remind workers of the basic considerations for controlling RAM. This video may be viewed individually and in Toolbox meetings, and it is posted along with more information on the RadCon Operations home page. Potential Jefferson Lab Internet Outage on March 1-2
Jefferson Lab's internet service provider will be conducting work on the lab's internet connection over the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2, this work could potentially cause intermittent loss of internet service to the lab. A full outage is not expected with this work. However, members of the Computing and Networking Infrastructure group will be monitoring the work and connection to ensure that should a loss of service occur, service will be quickly restored. Introducing the BlueJeans Multimedia Collaboration System
The CNI group is currently working with several groups onsite to test the deployment of the BlueJeans Videoconferencing system. This system will provide multimedia collaboration and videoconferencing to Jefferson Lab staff and users. While the system is in limited testing now, once fully deployed, staff and users will be able to log in with their CUE username and password and start their own meetings or attend meetings hosted by others. Once these meetings are created, non-JLab users can be provided with connection information so that they can attend, as well. The system supports collaboration, including any combination of chat, video and audio, and it also supports media, desktop and application sharing. All this will be available from virtually any device through a web-based interface, including the installed Polycom phones; Windows, Mac and Linux desktops and laptops; tablets; and mobile phones running iOS (iPhone/iPad) or Android. Once testing is complete, the CNI group will make the system available lab wide and will offer training sessions on the new system. Upgrade to Timesheet System
Jefferson Lab is rolling out an upgrade to the Time and Expense system (Timesheet system) on the evening of March 11. The upgraded system will be available for lab-wide use the morning of March 12. The upgrade differences are minor, with the main difference regarding how the menu information is displayed. Two informational sessions will be held in the CEBAF Center auditorium: one at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 7, and a second session at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 10. Both sessions are anticipated to last about half an hour. In addition, the Powerpoint slides will be made available on Insight if you would rather see the updates independently. The training will compare the old system to the upgraded system. If you have any questions about this upgrade, contact Bill Shelton, x7120.

New Jefferson Lab SOTRs Can Get Required Training on March 12
Jefferson Lab will hold Subcontracting Officer Technical Representative (SOTR) training (GEN020) on Wednesday, March 12, 8 a.m.-12 noon in the Applied Research Center (ARC) Room 231/233. Anyone who has recently been tasked to serve as a SOTR (or will be tasked over the next eight months) on any project at Jefferson Lab is required to attend this training. Attending this training is one of the certification requirements for all Jefferson Lab SOTRs. To attend, register in the Learning Management System by 5 p.m. Monday, March 10. This training session is limited to 12 attendees. Anyone with questions regarding this training or the SOTR certification process may contact Kathleen Jones, x5139.

The Quark Cafe staff is continuing its survey on Feb. 27 to assess the Jefferson Lab community's feelings about a range of cafeteria services. 2014 Annual T-Shirt Design Contest Is Underway
Will your design be immortalized in a Jefferson Lab T-shirt? Jefferson Lab's Annual T-shirt Design Contest is underway! Entries are due before close of business on March 21. Each submission should include a front (pocket) and back design. "Jefferson Lab," "DOE," "JSA, LLC," and "2014" must be included in the design. Resubmission of previous non-winning designs is welcome. To enter, submit your design, username, division and telephone (contact) number to Mary Jo Bailey, x7306, Mail Stop 6B. Soon, the JAG webpage will feature more information and a complete list of rules and submission requirements. The lab community will vote on designs March 26-April 4.

CEBAF Accelerator Housekeeping Wraps Up Friday
The CEBAF tunnel housekeeping work continues this week, 8:30-11:45 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. each day, Feb. 27-28. Volunteers are still needed to help in dusting off and wiping down components inside the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility and sweeping the tunnel floor. Jefferson Lab Golf League Forming for Season - Sign Up Now
Jefferson Lab golfers, and those who would like to be, are invited to join the Jefferson Lab Golf League for the 2014 season. The golf league season extends from early April to September, with tee-times at a local course starting at 4 p.m. If you're interested in joining, subscribe to the golf mailing list by sending an email to this address. Additional information will also be posted to the league's web page. The sign up period will extend through February, with an organizational meeting tentatively planned for the first week of March.
