12 GeV Upgrade

All of the beam transport scope has been completed, with the exception of final leak checks in the Hall D tagger vault. All of the 20 Amp trim supplies for 5.5-pass beam have been checked and installed. Status of box power supplies: RSEP9 and arc 7 are ready to be certified for the Personnel Safety System and hooked up to the dipole magnets; arc 9 has been received and is being uncrated; and RSEP8 and arc 8 are nearly ready for PSS certification. The PSS system is ready for certification of the Hall D branch. The stripline beam-position-monitor electronics are being installed on the beamline to Hall D. A 4.8 GeV beam has been to the end of arc 6, and 3-pass 4.8 GeV beam has been sent to the Hall A dump.

Time To Celebrate Records & Information Month
April is Records and Information Management (RIM) Month. Each week in April, look in the JLab Weekly Briefs for the RIM Fact of the Week, followed by the Trivia Question of the Week. Correct responses via email are entered into a drawing for a Starbucks gift card! (Limit one prize per person). For more information, contact Kim Kindrew.

JLab Records and Information Management Fact of the Week
Technology has made electronic records very easy to create but very difficult to manage. Structured records are maintained via databases, such as Costpoint. Unstructured records, however, are found in directories on shared drives, local disks, and even on mobile devices. Jefferson Lab's Records Management will conduct a variety of focused inventory of electronic records during the coming months. Records schedules Jefferson Lab uses to apply retention and disposition to records are found here.

RIM Trivia Question of the Week
Records management really does matter! Name the firm which voluntarily surrendered its licenses to practice as Certified Public Accountants in the United States after being found guilty of criminal charges relating to the firm's handling of the auditing of Enron. The Enron scandal was the result of this firm's shredding of documents related to its fraudulent audit activities of Enron. All responses must be received at kindrew@jlab.org by noon on Friday, when a drawing will take place of all correct answers. One person will win a Starbucks gift card! (Winner will be notified via email no later than 5 p.m. Friday following publication. Limit one gift card win per person.)

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A new Theory Center paper presents a method for analysis of Dalitz plot distributions based on the duality hypothesis, whereby cross channel resonances are responsible for direct channel backgrounds. Resonance contributions are represented through the associated Regge trajectories, which provide the dynamical link between individual partial waves. The amplitude is based on the Veneziano model, which features a high degree of degeneracy, and a method for breaking this degeneracy while preserving Regge asymptotics. The method is illustrated for vector charmonium three-pion distributions, but can be also applied to the decays of light mesons, such as η or ω, which are of interest to the Jefferson Lab spectroscopy programs.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Resolving ES&H Concerns
To ensure your welfare and productivity, Jefferson Lab has several mechanisms for employees, or anyone who comes into contact with the lab, to report issues potentially affecting the safety of workers, visitors, lab neighbors or the environment without fear of retaliation or reprisal. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 lists a variety of mechanisms for resolving and reporting ES&H concerns and for preventing similar concerns from occurring in the future.
Here is a list of the options you have for resolving an ES&H concern:

  • If possible, resolve the ES&H concern yourself.
  • If you are unable to resolve the concern yourself, refer the concern to your supervisor  and management chain using the mechanisms outlined here.
  • You may also consult your Safety Warden, Division Safety Officer, your representative to the Worker Safety Committee, or contact an ESH&Q staff member directly for any ES&H concerns you may have.
  • If you would like to remain anonymous, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, use Jefferson Lab’s Employee Concerns Program.
  • If one or more of the above steps have not resulted in resolution of the concern, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, you may also use the formal DOE Employee Concerns Management System hotline at 800-676-3267.
  • Or use this link to the form for the DOE's Differing Professional Opinion (DPO) process also found in DOE Order 442.2 or by calling or emailing the DOE DPO Manager, Scott Davis, at 301-903-9641.

The DOE DPO process ensures that all JSA employees and contractor employees have the right to report environment, safety, and health technical concerns that have not been resolved through routine work processes.

Once your concern has been addressed, communicate any lessons learned to your staff, co-workers, supervisors and your Division Lessons Learned Coordinator. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 offers more information on concern resolution.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Windows XP Systems Require Upgrades By April 8
Microsoft will stop supporting and providing security patches for Windows XP after Tuesday, April 8. Therefore, starting on April 8, the Computer Center will begin quarantining Windows XP systems on the guest network. This is being done to mitigate the risk to the laboratory from Windows XP vulnerabilities after its end-of-life date. If your computer is running XP, and it cannot be upgraded before the deadline, you will need to contact the cyber security team either:

If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Last Chance to Vote for Your Favorite Jefferson Lab T-Shirt Design
Vote for your favorite submission in the 2014 Jefferson Lab Annual T-Shirt Contest. There are 15 different designs to choose from this year. Voting will remain open until April 4. The winning design will be unveiled at the lab's annual Run-A-Round on May 7.

Monthly Tornado Siren Test Set for Friday
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m on Friday, April 4. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren may be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. If this were an actual Tornado Warning, this message would direct you to take cover immediately in a Severe Wind Take Cover area. The areas for individual buildings can be found online (see "Emergency Evac Plan" for your building).

Red Cross Blood Drive Set for April 15
The next American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Tuesday, April. 15, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in CEBAF Center, Room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend. Appointments and walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment, contact Johnie Banks, x7539. The linked page lists all eligibility requirements.
