12 GeV Upgrade
The Hall D segment of the Personnel Safety System has been certified. The Hall D tagger dump water system is operational, with checks of the controls underway. The beamline to the dump is under vacuum. Checks of the beam diagnostics are underway.
During initial in-tunnel operation of the ZA septa magnets in the west end of the accelerator on April 15, an electrical ground-fault occurred. This led to burn-through of a magnet coil and vacuum chamber, which permitted water to flood the beamline vacuum space in the region. An investigation determined that the ground-fault was caused by debris on the magnet between the coil and the vacuum chamber, likely introduced after installation in the tunnel. The cause of the burn-through was determined to be incorrect vendor assembly of the associated new box power supply, which made it possible for large ground currents to flow without tripping the detection circuit. The ZA magnet has been repaired and re-installed. Modifications have been done to that magnet and all similar ones to prevent debris from getting to critical locations. All new box power supplies have been modified to correct the assembly error. The magnet that failed has now been operated at the required setting for delivering 10 GeV beam to the Hall D beamline.

JSA Sabbatical and Research Leave Support at Jefferson Lab
The JSA/JLab Sabbatical and Research Leave Support Program enhances research opportunities for faculty through access to Jefferson Lab facilities and interaction with Jefferson Lab researchers and users, strengthens the teaching and research capabilities of universities through faculty involvement, and strengthens the research programs of Jefferson Lab by attracting "new blood" and integrating university faculty members in the lab's programs. JSA will award living expenses up to $1,500 per month for up to twelve months to qualified faculty members to relocate to the Hampton Roads area to conduct full-time research at Jefferson Lab while on an approved sabbatical or research leave. Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics
The transverse single spin asymmetry, AN, in inclusive lepton-proton hadron production is very similar in kinematics to the corresponding asymmetry in proton-proton scattering, allowing the possibility of testing transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization at high energies. A new paper calculates AN using TMD functions extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, and it shows that the results are compatible with HERMES data at high transverse momenta of the produced pion. Predictions for future measurements at Jefferson Lab at 12 GeV and an Electron-Ion Collider are also presented.

Spring Cleaning
Jefferson Lab will hold a lab-wide spring cleanup May 5-9 in advance of the May 17 Open House. The cleanup will involve all divisions and all employees. All managers are responsible for ensuring the participation of their individual staffs. The goal is to clean up individual work areas, as well as to remove scrap wood, cardboard, metals, trash and any excess items that may have piled up over time both indoors and out.
The cleanup also provides an excellent time to identify and remove excess equipment and furniture. Contact the Property Office at x7348 for the removal of excess and unused equipment, furniture and materials.
During the cleanup, please be careful not to mix recyclables. In other words, wood scrap, recyclable metals, cardboard, paper and other permissible recyclable office waste go into the proper collection containers at the Central Materials Storage Area (CMSA). General waste is to be collected and brought to the CMSA’s “trash” compactor. For those who do not have access to the CMSA, the gate will be open daily May 5-9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for your convenience.

Lock, Tag and Try
Every year, Jefferson Lab performs a Lock, Tag and Try (LTT) audit as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Fire Protection Association 70E: STANDARD FOR ELECTRICAL SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE®. The 2014 audit is planned to take place over the Scheduled Accelerator Down (SAD), which usually is a good time to observe ongoing LTT activities. The purpose of the audit is to locate and correct any deficiencies in the established LTT procedures or in employee understanding of those procedures. Here are some quick reminders for Jefferson Lab’s LTT program:
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (as required);
- Multiple energy sources require a written procedure;
- Each worker must apply/remove their own lock and tag;
- Interlocks and selectors or on-off switches are not energy isolation devices;
- Create an expectation of compliance; and
- Taken action before exposure.

Open House Volunteers Still Needed
Jefferson Lab is weeks away from the 2014 Open House scheduled for Saturday, May 17. The key to the event's success is our volunteers. You and your co-workers, members of our user community, students, and family members over 13 years of age are needed to fill the variety of volunteer taskings for the event. We need scientists and non-scientists, engineers and non-engineers, and technical and administrative staff. You can work the whole event (eight hours) or a four-hour shift (morning or afternoon). Non-exempt employees will be paid, with advance approval from their supervisors. To volunteer, sign up as soon as possible. Monthly Tornado Siren Test Set for Friday
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m on Friday, May 2. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren may be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. If this were an actual Tornado Warning, this message would direct you to take cover immediately in a Severe Wind Take Cover area. The areas for individual buildings can be found online (see "Emergency Evac Plan" for your building).
Registration is Open for the May 7 JAG Run-A-Round

The 29th annual Jefferson Lab Run-A-Round event will be held Wednesday, May 7, 3-6 p.m. JLab staff, users, students, full-time contractors and immediate family members are invited to participate. Staff and users that participate in the run or that volunteer can receive a free 2014 JLab T-shirt. All runners and walkers must register online to be eligible for prizes. Jefferson Science Associates Minority/Female Undergraduate Research Assistantship
Jefferson Lab is seeking candidates for a research assistantship. JSA will provide funds to support the student at the university during the 2014-2015 academic year. This project is supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program, a commitment from the JSA owners, SURA and PAE Applied Technologies. Initiatives Funds support programs, initiatives, and activities that further the scientific outreach, promote the science, education and technology of the Jefferson Lab and benefit the lab’s extended user community in ways that complement the lab’s basic and applied research missions. Student Projects, Volunteer Mentors Needed for High School Interns
Six outstanding high school students have been selected to participate in the lab's High School Summer Honors Program, which will be held June 23 - Aug. 1. Critical to the success of their internship experience are projects for the students and mentors who can oversee one or more students as they carry out their work. The students are currently in the 11th and 12th grades and have expressed interest in pursuing scientific and technical careers. Lab scientists, engineers and other technical managers who are interested in serving as a mentor to high-achieving high school students and have a project, or any number of small projects that can be accomplished over the summer, are asked to contact Brita Hampton with a description of the work to be assigned.
