12 GeV Upgrade

Accelerator Operations ended last week, marking the start of the summer 2014 Scheduled Accelerator Down (SAD). During the next three months, construction activities will ramp up as the Utilities Infrastructure Maintenance (UIM) project begins. This work addresses needed infrastructure support for operations in the 12 GeV era. In Hall D, installation work is progressing to prepare for the start of commissioning activities at the completion of the SAD. Hall C work continues on the Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS), with electrical and cryogenic services being installed. Shielding work in the SHMS that began in April will be completed at months end, leaving installation of the access flooring to complete.

JSA Sabbatical and Research Leave Support at Jefferson Lab
The JSA/JLab Sabbatical and Research Leave Support Program enhances research opportunities for faculty through access to Jefferson Lab facilities and interaction with Jefferson Lab researchers and users, strengthens the teaching and research capabilities of universities through faculty involvement, and strengthens the research programs of Jefferson Lab by attracting "new blood" and integrating university faculty members in the lab's programs. JSA will award living expenses up to $1,500 per month for up to twelve months to qualified faculty members to relocate to the Hampton Roads area to conduct full-time research at Jefferson Lab while on an approved sabbatical or research leave. Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A comparison of proton-deuteron and proton-proton Drell-Yan cross sections for the inclusive production of charged lepton pairs provides the clearest evidence for the flavor asymmetry in the proton sea, dbar - ubar.  A new paper computes nuclear smearing and nucleon off-shell corrections associated with the structure of the bound nucleon inside the deuteron, using methodology similar to that employed for studying nuclear corrections in electron-deuteron scattering at Jefferson Lab. The corrections are found to be significant at intermediate and large values of the quark momentum fraction x, and will need to be accounted for in future Drell-Yan experiments at Fermilab and J-PARC which aim to determine the dbar/ubar ratio for x < 0.6.

Engineering

Training Sessions for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
The Mechanical Engineering Group is developing a series of "Lunch-and-Learn" training sessions for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per the ASME Y14.5-2009 Standard. At this point, the group is planning to hold the sessions on Wednesdays, noon to 1 p.m. If you are interested in attending these sessions, send send an email to Tim Michalski indicating your interest in participating in the training, as well as any comments you might have. This activity will commence in the next couple of months, pending the level of interest.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Safe Digging
Spring time in Hampton Roads is a very busy time for homeowners, with planting, deck and fence installation, lawn irrigation system repair, and many more other outside work activities. One thing that these tasks all have in common is that they involve outdoor digging or excavation. As we all know, there is a good chance that you have buried utilities (electric, natural gas, cable television, telephone, etc.) in your yard. So before you begin any outdoor digging/excavation project at home, first call Miss Utility of Virginia at 811 (or 1-800-552-7001), or visit the website at www.va811.com

Homeowners should contact Miss Utility at least three working days before you plan to dig/excavate. Remember, even if your project is small, it is always best to call. It’s a free service and it is for your safety. Here at Jefferson Lab, we have a similar process for digging/excavation and blind penetration operations. Refer to www.jlab.org/fm/ and look under ‘Fillable Forms’ for more information on these two activities.

 

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

SmartCard Renewals
If you have a Jefferson Lab SmartCard, you must renew your SmartCard by visiting the IT Division Helpdesk between June 2 and July 11. For security reasons, Jefferson Lab SmartCards expire every three years, which means they must be renewed to continue functioning. In addition, the CNI group is making other changes to the SmartCard system that will require all cards to be renewed (even if issued recently).

To avoid problems and delays, be sure to have your card renewed between June 2 and July 11. Once the expiration date passes, the card will no longer work, and the user will not be able to log in to Jefferson Lab systems using the card. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Maintenance Period Scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, 5-7 p.m.
During the maintenance period, there will be a short network outage for devices in the CEBAF Center atrium, auditorium and business offices. Network connectivity will be restored by 6 p.m. There will be a short outage of Wiki's served from wiki.jlab.org, while some underlying libraries are updated; any outage will be brief (about 5-10 minutes). Additionally, updates to Firefox, Thunderbird and Adobe Flash and Acrobat Reader will be sent out. Finally, the CNI group will release Windows and Linux patches to the site. Plan on rebooting your desktop systems on either Wednesday or Thursday, May 28-29. If you have any questions or concerns about the tasks scheduled for this maintenance period, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Short phone outages on Saturday, May 31
On Saturday, May 31, 8 a.m.-noon, there will be short (15-minute) rolling phone outages in these locations (ARC, Support Service Center, CEBAF Center,  Experimental Equipment Lab, Test Lab, TED Building, Building 19 (Forestry Building), and Building 57. This work will provide a backup router for the phones.  If you have any questions or concerns about this work, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Public Zimbra Briefcase Lives Up to Its Name
In Zimbra, you can share a Briefcase (or folder) in several ways (Internal user, External Guest or Public). This is just a reminder that choosing "Public" will allow anyone in the world to have read-only access to that Briefcase or folder without a password. If you must share a file or folder with non-Jefferson Lab users, share it to individuals specifically instead of just making the files "Public." Jefferson Lab Spam and Virus filter software changing
On June 17, the CNI group will migrate from the current spam and virus solutions to an updated environment. This environment is expected to provide better spam- and virus-blocking capabilities, while also providing a local (at Jefferson Lab) User Spam Quarantine server. The group is planning to provide user training a week or so prior to the migration. Watch for additional announcements as the time approaches.

Upcoming Jefferson Lab Pager Audit
If you carry a Jefferson Lab-issued pager, you will soon receive an email with instructions for completing a brief online audit. This is for one-way pagers and texting devices and does not apply to cell phones, which will be audited separately at another time. This audit helps the lab to control the monthly recurring cost associated with pagers by identifying those that are no longer needed. Pressure Systems Awareness Training Offered
A training session for SAF130A, Pressure Systems Awareness, will be held on June 10 at 2 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. Registration is available through the Learning Management System. If you need this training, register and make plans to attend.

Electronic Tour Database
Employees or users wanting to escort visitors through the accelerator site to tour radiological areas must request dosimetry (a self-reading pocket dosimeter, or SRPD) through the online tour system. This system can be found on the Radiation Control Department webpage and from Insight. The new system provides a link for the visitor to fill out required information for the tour before they actually arrive. The escort can read and electronically sign their agreement before the tour starts, which will in turn speed up the process of being issued dosimetry. This process will also allow the guards to check the visitor information online, negating the need for a paper form. If you have any questions regarding the online tour system or need help setting up a tour, contact Becky Mosbrucker, x7236.
