12 GeV Upgrade

On the evening of May 7, 10.5 GeV beam was delivered to the Hall D tagger dump. This completed the 12 GeV Upgrade Project beam commissioning goals for FY14. More importantly, it sets the stage for detector commissioning in Hall D this fall. Work is progressing on completing the magnet power supply installation and checkout for extraction on passes 1, 2, 4 and 5 and the beamlines to Hall B and Hall C. Final checks of the instrumentation for the Hall D tagger vault are nearly completed. Work continues on the nano-Amp beam position monitor system for the Hall D beamline; procurements have been placed ,including those for the cavity fabrication.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A QCD picture for scattering of mesons from hadrons at high energies implies that the projectile meson decomposes into a quark-antiquark pair that interacts with the target. The fast-moving quarks are described by Wilson-line operators, and the energy dependence of the scattering amplitude is governed by the rapidity evolution of a "color dipole" formed by the two Wilson-line operators. In the case of baryons, the corresponding operator consists of three Wilson lines, and to describe the high-energy scattering of baryons, one needs the evolution equation for these "color tripole" operators. This equation was recently derived in perturbation theory at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant.

Facilities Management and Logistics

Part of Lawrence Drive to Become One-Way Only
Jefferson Lab and the School Bus Depot will be sharing the Hogan Drive entrance with the new Tech Center at Oyster Point Market Place development that is currently being constructed between Hogan Drive and Oyster Point Road. To accommodate this additional traffic on Hogan Drive, the developer is going to add a new entry and exit turn lane, as well as a road divider on Hogan Drive. These changes make it necessary to convert the north end of Lawrence Drive to a one-way street.

The one-way street will start at the intersection of Lawrence Drive and Hofstadter Road and will continue to Hogan Drive. Those traveling north on Lawrence Drive will be required to turn onto Hofstadter Road to exit the lab. The use of Hofstadter Road will also be required when leaving the Applied Research Center and Support Services Center parking lots if you wish to exit the lab using Hogan Drive.

The one-way conversion of Lawrence Drive will occur on June 15. Awareness signs will be posted around the affected area to provide proper notification of the change.

Hogan Drive Roadwork
Next week, the installation of a sewer pipe for the Tech Center at Oyster Point development will begin under Hogan Drive near the intersection at Lawrence Drive. The installation process will use an underground boring technique, so the work should have no impact on lab operations or access to Hogan Drive. However, drivers are urged to use extra caution on Hogan Drive throughout the roadwork. The work is scheduled to being Tuesday or Wednesday, June 3-4.

Engineering

Training Sessions for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
The Mechanical Engineering Group is developing a series of "Lunch-and-Learn" training sessions for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per the ASME Y14.5-2009 Standard. At this point, the group is planning to hold the sessions on Wednesdays, noon to 1 p.m. If you are interested in attending these sessions, send send an email to Tim Michalski indicating your interest in participating in the training, as well as any comments you might have. This activity will commence in the next couple of months, pending the level of interest.

Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

Counterfeit Electrical Products
Electrical products can be very hazardous when they are impersonated or "counterfeited." Counterfeit products have not undergone testing by a recognized independent laboratory, most likely do not comply with industry safety requirements, and often their origin is unknown and therefore the manufacturer can’t be held accountable for any incidents involving the electrical product. Here are a few simple things to look for when purchasing an electrical product for the home:

  • Read the packaging and labels carefully (they should be free of grammar and spelling errors);
  • The name and contact information of the manufacturer should be displayed on the packaging;
  • Avoid unknown brands or products that don’t show any brand affiliation;
  • Make purchases from established vendors who make their purchases from legitimate and genuine distributors/manufacturers; and
  • Remember the saying “if it is too good to be true, then it probably is, when comparing competitor prices on electrical products.

Jefferson Lab has an Electrical Equipment Safety Inspection Procedure to help protect against unsafe electrical equipment being used at the workplace. For information on this procedure, refer to the ES&H Manual Chapter 6200T1.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Short Phone Outages on Saturday, May 31
On Saturday, May 31, 8 a.m.-noon, there will be short (15-minute) rolling phone outages in these locations: ARC, Support Service Center, CEBAF Center,  Experimental Equipment Lab, Test Lab, TED Building, Building 19 (Forestry Building), Building 57, Hall D Counting House, and the Counting House (Building 97). This work will provide a backup router for the phones. In addition, there will be a brief network outage in the TED building while the network switches are updated with new code.  This outage will affect both phones and computers. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

SmartCard Renewals
If you have a Jefferson Lab SmartCard, you must renew your SmartCard by visiting the IT Division Helpdesk between June 2 and July 11. For security reasons, Jefferson Lab SmartCards expire every three years, which means they must be renewed to continue functioning. In addition, the CNI group is making other changes to the SmartCard system that will require all cards to be renewed (even if issued recently).

To avoid problems and delays, be sure to have your card renewed between June 2 and July 11. Once the expiration date passes, the card will no longer work, and the user will not be able to log in to Jefferson Lab systems using the card. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Jefferson Lab Spam and Virus Filter Software Changing
On June 17, the CNI group will migrate from the current spam and virus solutions to an updated environment. This environment is expected to provide better spam- and virus-blocking capabilities, while also providing a local (at Jefferson Lab) User Spam Quarantine server. The group is planning to provide user training a week or so prior to the migration. Watch for additional announcements as the time approaches.

Upcoming Jefferson Lab Pager Audit
If you carry a Jefferson Lab-issued pager, you will soon receive an email with instructions for completing a brief online audit. This is for one-way pagers and texting devices and does not apply to cell phones, which will be audited separately at another time. This audit helps the lab to control the monthly recurring cost associated with pagers by identifying those that are no longer needed. If you have any questions about the audit, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Announcements

Pressure Systems Awareness Training Offered
A training session for SAF130A, Pressure Systems Awareness, will be held on June 10 at 2 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. Registration is available through the Learning Management System. If you need this training, register and make plans to attend.

Electronic Tour Database
Employees or users wanting to escort visitors through the accelerator site to tour radiological areas must request dosimetry (a self-reading pocket dosimeter, or SRPD) through the online tour system. This system can be found on the Radiation Control Department webpage and from Insight. The new system provides a link for the visitor to fill out required information for the tour before they actually arrive. The escort can read and electronically sign their agreement before the tour starts, which will in turn speed up the process of being issued dosimetry. This process will also allow the guards to check the visitor information online, negating the need for a paper form. If you have any questions regarding the online tour system or need help setting up a tour, contact Becky Mosbrucker, x7236.
