12 GeV Upgrade

The scope for the 12 GeV Upgrade accelerator DC power subsystem is nearly completed. A handful of 20 Amp trim power supplies need to be installed and checked out on the Hall B beamline (known as 2C) and on the Hall C beamline (known as 3C). The box power supplies for 2C and 3C have been tested into resistive loads. Connections to magnets, Personnel Safety System certification and final tests are taking place this week. The subsystem for Instrumentation and Controls/Safety continues their work on the fast feedback and nano-Amp beam position monitor system for the beamline to the Hall D tagger.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A derivation of the cross section for semi-inclusive charge-changing neutrino scattering from nuclei is presented in a new paper. Unlike some previous analyses, finite masses are kept for all particles involved in the reaction. The general lepton and hadron tensors obtained are relativistically covariant, and the final cross section expressions are presented for the case where a charged lepton and a charged hadron are detected.

Engineering

The Machine Shop is working on the following projects:

  • a 500 MHz multi spoke superconductive cavity (double cavity);
  • magnet core extensions and core modification for the CX, CW and CV family of magnets;
  • modifications to two dogleg dipole chambers;
  • final assembly for the Hall C Super High Momentum Spectrometer SIV Slit box assembly (final machining complete);
  • assembly of two new DL corrector magnets (completed);
  • a new mirror box assembly for Hall A;
  • CRM C100 cryomodule cavity tooling transition vise/clamp plate;
  • assembly of the GlueX commissioning target for Hall D;
  • construction of the beam dump view body for Hall A; and
  • continuing work on various small machining jobs for lab customers.

    Environment, Safety, Health and Quality

    Utilities and Infrastructure Modernization (UIM) Work and Crews
    Many across Jefferson Lab are aware of a major infrastructure upgrade beginning this week. For those not directly involved, here is a little background information. Various loops of electrical power across the accelerator site (and smaller portions in other buildings) will be turned off for several days at a time. Notifications will be provided, so there should be no surprises. The power outages are needed for the disconnection and reconnection of new underground electrical cables and installation of supporting structures. Scheduling has been designed to minimize outage periods.

    You may see various York River (electrical contractor) vehicles and support equipment around the site. Be sure to give these contractors room to maneuver trucks and other equipment, especially in the early days of this effort as they learn their way around our buildings and roadways. The second phase of the project will occur in summer of 2015.

    Computing and Networking Infrastructure

    ReadyTalk End-of-Life
    ReadyTalk is an audio, video and web conferencing service that was offered by ESnet Collaboration Services (ECS) and will be discontinued by the lab's provider on Sept. 30. With the purchase of BlueJeans, the IT Division has decided to make BlueJeans the primary option for audio and video conferencing. Like ReadyTalk, BlueJeans provides audio conferencing, H.323 video conferencing and web conferencing. Jefferson Lab will end support for ReadyTalk by Aug. 1.

    To assist with an easy migration, there will be training sessions held on July 10 and July 23 at 2 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. ReadyTalk was mainly used for audio conferencing, therefore, audio conferencing will be the focus of these training sessions. There will be time at the end of each session for all questions regarding BlueJeans (H.323, web conferencing, etc.). To learn more, visit the BlueJeans webpage for information on logging in and configuring BlueJeans with your Jefferson Lab computer account.

    Reminder: Renew Your SmartCard Now
    If you have a Jefferson Lab SmartCard, you must renew your SmartCard by visiting the IT Division Helpdesk before July 11. For security reasons, Jefferson Lab SmartCards expire every three years, which means they must be renewed to continue functioning. In addition, the CNI group is making other changes to the SmartCard system that will require all cards to be renewed (even if issued recently).

    To avoid problems and delays, be sure to have your card renewed before July 11. Once the expiration date passes, the card will no longer work, and the user will not be able to log in to Jefferson Lab systems using the card. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

    Announcements

    Personal Dosimeter Changeout Set for Tuesday, July 1
    Jefferson Lab's semi-annual personal dosimeter changeout will begin at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1. This includes the dosimeters of all lab staff, users, subcontractors and students. If you will be away from the lab on vacation or travel, be sure to put your dosimeter in its place in the rack before you depart the lab. If you won't be using your dosimeter during the changeout period, place it in its assigned place in the dosimetry racks for the changeout. As always, make sure your dosimeter is in its assigned rack at the end of your work day. If you need to use your dosimeter during the changeout period on July 1, you may exchange it that morning in the Radiation Control Dosimetry Office in Bldg. 52B, Room 4, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. If you have questions, contact Becky Mosbrucker, x7236.

    Upcoming Changes to the Requisition System
    On Tuesday, July 15, Jefferson Lab's requisition system, Maximo, will be updated to include new functionality to improve ordering and processing of equipment at the laboratory. Two new questions will be added to the “Other Information” section for network-enabled and calibration equipment. Also, all Electronic Data Processing (EDP) equipment subject to EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) requirements will now require EPEAT documentation to be attached to the requisition. For more information, visit the Computer Center website. If you have any questions, join IT Division staff on Friday, July 11, for a Q&A session at 9 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. Alternatively, feel free to send any questions to the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

    DOE Inspector General Awareness Briefing
    Special Agent Mike Adams from the Department of Energy will provide a general awareness briefing on current topics involving criminal fraud within DOE, including contractor whistle-blower protection and DOE IG Hotline reporting. The briefing will take place in the CEBAF Center auditorium on Wednesday, July 2, at 10 a.m.

    JSA Initiatives Fund Program - Call for Proposals
    JSA is soliciting proposals for Initiatives Fund support for the FY2015 program. An Initiatives Fund Evaluation Committee will review eligible proposals that meet the criteria. Members of the Jefferson Lab user community, Jefferson Lab researchers and staff, other individuals or groups who can make unique contributions to the lab's research, development, education and technology transfer missions may submit proposals. See current and past projects supported in the Initiatives Fund Program. Proposals are due by close of business on July 21. For more information, see the full announcement.

    2014 Open House Photos
    Public Affairs extends its many thanks to those who shared photos of the 2014 Open House. You can currently see some of the staff and shared photos on the digital picture frame slideshow in the CEBAF Center lobby.
