12 GeV Upgrade

The conventional facilities scope for the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade is complete. Commissioning of the tunnel air conditioning was performed the week of Oct. 12. During commissioning, a control programming issue with the chilled water temperature in relationship to the dew point was identified. The controls subcontractor has corrected the controls programming and the system is working as designed.

JSA 2016 Initiatives Fund Awards Announced
Jefferson Sciences Associates, LLC, has announced the award of $455,000 to support projects related to education, outreach and career development to staff and users at Jefferson Lab. The Initiatives Fund supports programs, initiatives and activities that further the scientific outreach and promote the science, education and technology missions of Jefferson Lab in ways that complement its basic and applied research focus. Program funds also support activities of the lab’s extended users community. The FY2016 Initiatives Fund program includes new awards for 37 projects. Sixty percent of the award funds support the education and outreach programs at Jefferson Lab. Another 20 percent goes toward support for meetings, workshops and conferences. The remaining funds support post doc career development, other lab programs, and users initiatives and activities. See the full list on the JSA website.

Publications Refresher Course Offered Nov. 9
The next Publications Training and Refresher course will be held on Monday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. In this session, authors will learn how to submit manuscripts to the Publications Review and Approval System, how to make recommended revisions to papers during the signature process, and how to add the relevant information once the paper is published. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. If you would like to attend, R.S.V.P. to Kim Edwards by Friday, Nov. 6.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A new paper presents a multiscale thermalization algorithm for lattice gauge theory, which enables efficient parallel generation of uncorrelated gauge field configurations. The algorithm combines standard Monte Carlo techniques with ideas from real space renormalization group and multigrid methods. The viability of the algorithm is demonstrated for pure Yang-Mills gauge theory for both heat bath and hybrid Monte Carlo evolution, and shown to ameliorate the problem of topological freezing up to controllable lattice spacing artifacts.

Pressure Systems Program Changes for Those Who Operate, Repair or Design Pressure or Vacuum Systems
The Pressure and Vacuum Systems Safety Program (Chapter 6151 in the ES&H Manual) has undergone a significant revision in order to work more efficiently and incorporate "lessons learned" from incidents both at Jefferson Lab and elsewhere. This revised program, along with the closely associated and recently revised "Welding and Brazing Supplement", will be launched starting Nov. 9 by making the new documentation available at the ES&H Manual website for reading. Additionally, the Pressure and Vacuum Systems Hazard Awareness training module SAF130A has been updated to reflect the revised program. All those who were trained prior to Dec. 15, 2014, must retake this class before Dec. 14, 2015.  The on-line refresher version is now available online. Those that require the training but have never taken it can sign up for the classroom course here. A more extensive email outlining detailed plans and timelines for full implementation of this revised program and the associated required training will be sent to those who are currently trained in Pressure and Vacuum Systems Hazard Awareness. You can see the full memo here.

Applications Due for Summer Student Internships at Jefferson Lab
Undergraduate students majoring in math, science or engineering may now apply for a Department of Energy summer internship at Jefferson Lab or any of the other 16 national laboratories via the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program. SULI is a ten-week summer internship program that provides a $500 weekly stipend and housing at the SURA Residence Facility for students that live more than 60 miles away from Jefferson Lab. Undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to apply (a student must have completed one full year at a college before he or she can apply). The application deadline for the program is Jan. 8, 2016. For more information and for the application, visit the SULI website. If you have any questions about SULI at Jefferson Lab, contact Lisa Surles-Law or Jan Tyler.
