12 GeV Upgrade

Shielding blocks are being placed in Hall C to create a wall between the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) and the beam dump. The SHMS is shorter, and can rotate to larger angles, than would be possible if the shielding were part of the spectrometer itself. Jefferson Lab and university staff completed work on one of the trigger hodoscopes recently, and now half of the SHMS detectors are completely installed inside the concrete shield house, as scheduled. The other detectors are undergoing final assembly and cosmic-ray tests. The Physics Division review panel has approved a continuation of the testing program of the Horizontal Bend (HB) magnet, allowing the magnet to be energized to just over half of its ultimate operating current. Construction of the final three superconducting magnets for the SHMS are progressing, with the dipole magnet coil now sealed within its welded helium vessel, the Q2 coil squeezed inside its collaring rings, and the final potting finished for the Q3 magnet coil.

Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

State-of-the-art lattice QCD calculations are beginning to include isospin breaking corrections from QED and the up-down quark mass splitting.  The inclusion of QED effects faces a number of challenges that stem from the disparate length scales associated with QED and QCD: typically, the spatial volume is used to regulate the long-distance physics, which leads to substantial corrections in simulations at finite lattice volumes. A new paper investigates a novel infrared regularization scheme involving a photon mass, and finds good control of the systematics associated with the infinite volume extrapolation. This method will enable the study of elastic charged hadron interactions with lattice QCD.

Engineering

Over the past couple of weeks, the Alignment group has been involved in the re-installation of several components in the accelerator, including the 750 MHz radiofrequency separators, viewers and harps in the extractor region. They also assisted in the bubble chamber work in the injector and have updated survey control in the beam switchyard.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Critical Internet Explorer Patch Released
Microsoft has just released a critical patch (on Aug. 18) for all versions of Internet Explorer. Jefferson Lab is currently evaluating the patch and plans to release it to the site tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 19. Plan on rebooting your Windows desktop, if prompted, to allow this critical patch to be fully installed and your system protected following the patch installation. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

MIS Outage Set for Saturday, Aug. 29
Starting at around 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, all MIS applications will be down while a backend database server is updated. All MIS applications will be unavailable until noon on Saturday, Aug. 29. Plan your work accordingly. If you have any questions or concerns with this outage, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

Announcements

Volunteers Sought for Sept. 11 United Way Day of Caring
The 2015 United Way Day of Caring will be Sept. 11. Jefferson Lab hopes to send a team of 10-15 volunteers to the Habitat for Humanity house-building project underway at 83 Shoe Lane in Newport News. Volunteers will participate in a variety of supervised construction activities. No experience is necessary. Volunteer deadline is Aug. 28. If you wish to volunteer, see the all-staff memo for requirements, supervisor approval process and forms. Questions about the United Way Day of Caring may be directed to Joshua Cameron, x7409.

2015 Jefferson Lab Fall Golf Outing Set for Sept. 18
This year's event will be held on Friday, Sept. 18, at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Green Course) in Williamsburg, Va. The tourney will kick off at noon with a shotgun start. The format will be a handicapped Captain’s Choice. Each foursome must include at least two Jefferson Lab employees. The cost for Jefferson Lab employees (you qualify if you receive a paycheck from JSA - Jefferson Science Associates, LLC) is $60. The cost for non-JLab employees is $75. The cost includes range balls, green fees, cart fees, food after the tournament and prizes. To sign up, bring your average score for 18 holes or current handicap along with payment to Mike Zarecky, TED 2500/19. The deadline for tournament registration is Monday, Sept. 14. Questions may be directed to Mike at x7609 or Danny Machie at x7501.

Feds Feed Families Local Campaign
The Department of Energy is again participating in the "Feds Feed Families" food drive this year. At Jefferson Lab, the Thomas Jefferson Site Office will be collecting donations from its federal employees to benefit the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. There is no expectation of Jefferson Lab employee participation in this program, although anyone wishing to contribute may do so. Marked donation boxes for non-perishable food items will be located in the CEBAF Center lobby August 10-31. For more information, visit the Feds Feed Families website or contact Steve Neilson at x7215.

JLab Weekly Briefs is an ongoing publication providing information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, free-electron laser, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: Public Affairs or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
